Lady Diana Canbury ist mit ihrer Equipage auf dem Weg zum Ball des Herzogs. An einer Kreuzung kommt ihre Kutsche zum Stehen, als plötzlich der Verschlag aufgerissen wird und ein bewaffneter Räuber zu ihr in die Kutsche springt. Mit einer schnellen Bewegung greift er der Lady an die Brust und reißt ihr die Brosche mit dem überaus wertvollen, gelben Kanarien – Brillanten vom Kleid. Die Lady fällt in Ohnmacht, der Räuber entflieht in die Nacht.
Einige Tage später ist Sherlock Holmes bei der Lady Canbury vorstellig und beichtet ihr, jener Räuber zu sein, der ihr den Kanarien – Brillanten entwendete.....
