A novel of buried secrets, unimaginable trauma and how the love of family can pull you through to a brighter future from Louise Milligan, bestselling author of Pheasants Nest.

On the sands of Shellybanks, where tides can quickly turn treacherous, journalist Kate Delaney once nearly drowned. Years later, reeling from a violent crime that has upended her life in Melbourne, she returns to Dublin to comfort her beloved aunt Dolores—only to discover Dolores has her own buried trauma.

As a teenager, Dolores was drawn into a disturbing religious movement that stole her youth, her freedom, and so much more. With Kate's help, she is determined to confront the powerful network that made her endure years of silence and shame.

Shellybanks is a haunting tale of secrecy and survival, charting how two women find strength in each other as they reckon with Ireland's hidden histories and the scars that endure across generations.©2026 Louise Milligan (P)2026 W. F. Howes Ltd and Allen & Unwin

Fascinating story of journalist Kate Delaney’s exploration & investigation into family events in 1970s Ireland. Secrets and their rolling influence on the present. Genevieve O’Reilly’s audiobook narration is the best I’ve heard (& I listen to a lot audiobooks).

Unputdownable (y’know, for an audiobook)

I thoroughly enjoyed this story, it’s a fantastic follow on from pheasants nest. I find myself a little bit haunted by my catholic upbringing as I reflect on the role of women in the church. I loved the characters and the way that the Irish culture plays into the story. I’ll be thinking about this story for a long time. And can’t wait for more novels from this author.

I couldn’t stop thinking about this book.

I don’t have the words or skill to do this work justice in a review. My heart ached all the way through it. I am in awe of Louise Milligan. She is a master story teller. And Genevieve O'Reilly’s narration was absolutely perfect, bringing every word and phrase to life in living colour.

Breathtaking

Loved this book - a very bitter sweet story of abuse in the Catholic Church in Ireland - but from a fresh prospective.
Great story telling

5 star plus. Long live great Aussie authors.
