Publisher's Summary

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of She Lies in Wait by Gytha Lodge, read by John Hopkins, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Joe Coen and Gytha Lodge.

Six friends. One killer. Whom do you trust?

On a hot July night in 1983, six school friends go camping in the forest. Bright and brilliant, they are destined for great things, and young Aurora Jackson is dazzled to be allowed to tag along.

Thirty years later, a body is discovered. DCI Sheens is called to the scene, but he already knows what's waiting for him: Aurora Jackson, found at long last.

But that's not all. The friends have all maintained their innocence, but the body is found in a hideaway only the six of them knew about.

It seems the killer has always lurked very close to home....

meh

Struggled to finish it. The characters were one dimensional and unlikable, and I guessed the killer pretty much immediately. Huge disappointment as it did sound promising.

It's ok

Volume changes throughout performance which frustrated me listening in the car. Aurora's character is written and read so beautifully. Story is ok. I can't think of any stand out points though.

Full of suspense

I won't go into the summary as to not give away anything but I am sad not to be spending time with Jonah and Julliet and will miss them. This story is not always fast paced but never failed to hold my interest. Wonderful characters and well wrtitten. The ending had me holding my breath, was full of suspense and not rushed like some books. I thoroughly enjoyed this and hope there is more in this series.

Worth a listen

It is worth a listen and quite a good story. Felt towards the end the story was left with a few loose ends.

Highly enjoyable "unforgotten" style murder myster

Great story, clear and well read performances. I like that different voices read the chapters told from different character perspectives. Found myself gripped as the story wound to its climax, unable to stop listening!

A masterclass in detection and narration

This is a fabulous first book and Jonah Sheens goes straight up there as one of the most original fictional detectives. The story is so gripping and unlike many books like this the solution was absolutely satisfying. A word on the narration – perfect. I don’t normally enjoy books with multiple narrators but this felt so natural. A brilliant five star audiobook.

Excellent

This was an excellent police procedural with great characters among the detectives and their interactions with the suspects. It’s a long time since I have had such a satisfactory listen. The narration was also well done.

A gripping who done it

Really enjoyed this listen, from start to finish. It was very easy to follow and great to have the story read by different voices which gave a good contrast between the two stories, which unfolded in tandem while the killer was revealed. I'd recommend to all as a must read/listen!

Haunting

Trigger warning for rape, underage drug use and grooming. This book follows the investigation into the murder of Aurora Jackson which happened 30 years ago. We go between the summer of 1983 where we hear from Aurora about the night that changed everything and present-day where DCI Sheens is investigating Jackson's sister and her friends who were there that night while also trying to hide the secrets that he has. I really enjoyed this book because I really couldn't tell who killed Aurora, if she was indeed killed or overdosed. I liked that Aurora's chapters were narrated by Gytha Lodge herself. I found her voice eerie which really did bring that night to life and gave me chills. While Joe Coen did a great job at narrating the investigation. There are some really dark storylines in this book which made some of it hard to listen to but thankfully it didn't go into too much detail to leave me feeling ill. You can definitely tell how the characters have grown since that night and how it changed them. They were all looking out for Aurora as she was the youngest there that night, and they all feel the guilt for not finding her and protecting her further.
