Publisher's Summary

Captain Sharpe's task is to recover from a feared guerilla leader the gold Wellington so desperately needs. The enemy he faces strikes terror into the hearts of all around - a renegade guerilla band whose leader has a particular loathing for Sharpe, who has stolen his woman.

Soldier, hero, rogue - Sharpe is the man you always want on your side. Born in poverty, he joined the army to escape jail and climbed the ranks by sheer brutal courage. He knows no other family than the regiment of the 95th Rifles whose green jacket he proudly wears.

Critic Reviews

"Sharpe and his creator are national treasures." (Sunday Telegraph)
"Bernard Cornwell is a literary miracle. Year after year, hail, rain, snow, war and political upheavals fail to prevent him from producing the most entertaining and readable historical novels of his generation." (Daily Mail)
"Cornwell's narration is quite masterly and supremely well-researched." (Observer)
"The best battle scenes of any writer I've ever read, past or present. Cornwell really makes history come alive." (George R.R. Martin)

Remarkable stuff as always

A less expensive book somehow, less notable side characters, yet no less engrossing than the others. There is no great battle, but the climax is no less affecting. Classic Sharpe, classic Cromwell.

good - found it a little drawn out at times

after the excellent Sharpe's Eagle, i found this one a little dull at times - only really recovering in the last quarter of the book. i did enjoy it overall, and it hasnt put me off continuing with Sharpe

jolly romp as always

all ways a good listen good boys own stuff , not my favourite of the series , a couple of plot twists that stretched the imagination a little too far , Rupert Farley is very good however he shouldnt do women they all sound like les dawson carrying on and Sharpes accent is thick as a yard of lard ....other than that beautifully read.
