Publisher's Summary
Richard Sharpe, asked to help an old friend, meets, at last, the greatest enemy.
Five years after the Battle of Waterloo, Sharpe's peaceful retirement in Normandy is shattered. An old friend, Don Blas Vivar, is missing in Chile, reported dead at rebel hands--a report his wife refuses to believe. She appeals to Sharpe to find out the truth.
Sharpe, along with Patrick Harper, finds himself bound for Chile via St. Helena, where they have a fateful meeting with the fallen emperor Napoleon. Convinced they are on their way to collect a corpse, neither man can imagine the dangers that await them in Chile.…
Soldier, hero, rogue--Sharpe is the man you always want on your side. Born in poverty, he joined the army to escape jail and climbed the ranks by sheer brutal courage. He knows no other family than the regiment of the 95th Rifles, whose green jacket he proudly wears.
Critic Reviews
"Bernard Cornwell is a literary miracle. Year after year, hail, rain, snow, war and political upheavals fail to prevent him from producing the most entertaining and readable historical novels of his generation." ( Daily Mail)
"Cornwell's narration is quite masterly and supremely well-researched." ( Observer)
"The best battle scenes of any writer I've ever read, past or present. Cornwell really makes history come alive." (George R.R. Martin)

Bernard Cornwell has done it again! Excellent
I have listened to all the Sharpe books and now relistening for a second time to pick up the bits I may have misheard/didn't catch the first time and just because I enjoyed them first time round. I love history and Mr Cornwell with the help of Rupert Farley, who is by the way, the perfect choice to read these tales of daring do. Both writer and narrator bring to life the horrors, unfairness, terror, and the boredom that was the lot of an 19th century soldier. Rupert brings Sharpe to life and at times I feeI am marching and on the battlefield along side him. Bernard Cornwell is a writer of genius with his wealth of research, true to life characters, and great storylines he is truly deserving of all the accolades he receives.

What clever story & a fitting end to Sharpe
Brilliant & clever to again entwine real history with the story of Sharpe. Reading all the books in the right order was a great pleasure & I am looking forward to listen to more of the Bernard Cornwell books. Again the narrator Rupert Farley made the characters come to life with his understanding of the personalities & the clever accents. Fabulous last story & a fitting end for Sharpe, but I will miss him & Harper.

sharpe 's devil - a devilishly good book
The final story here is good. The voices from the reader are also good but after a whole series the Scottish accent is the same for Scottmen in the series. and if that's my biggest complaint - well that's got to speak for the enjoyment from this and all the sharpe series.
