Story
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Story
Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he toils willingly, trusting that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and lush wilds spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.

The Union army may be full of bastards, but there's only one who thinks he can save the day singlehanded when the Gurkish come calling: the incomparable Colonel Sand dan Glokta.
Curnden Craw and his dozen are out to recover a mysterious item from beyond the Crinna. Only one small problem: no one seems to know what the item is. Shevedieh, the self-styled best thief in Styria, lurches from disaster to catastrophe alongside her best friend and greatest enemy, Javre, Lioness of Hoskopp. And after years of bloodshed, the idealistic chieftain, Bethod, is desperate to bring peace to the North.
There's only one obstacle left - his own lunatic champion, the most feared man in the North: the Bloody-Nine....

What an absolute treasure this series has been . Greatest audiobooks on the market. The narrator is in a class of his own and the writing is stand alone in its depth , humour and characters you grow to love .

Amazing as always
Joe Abercrombie together with Steven Pacey is second to none. They have a perfect symbiotic relationship that make for an amazing listen. I’ve listened to every book previous to this and about to start the next 3 in the half series.

For those familiar with the First Law books
This collection of short stories adds further depth to some of the great characters already acquainted with in the First Law and First Law World series, plus a few new names who tie in. Hearing some of the favourites back in the day is a real treat and Pacey performs these younger versions excellently. A few gaps filled, some alternative perspectives and learning how some names were earned. Another gem from Abercrombie.

WOW! AWESOME!!!
It's quite obvious why Joe Abercrombie has firmly established himself as one of the genre's greats, & I expect that he'll stay up there. As usual Steven Pacey breathes a roar reality into it, giving it such believable life. Truly a joy to listen to, or just to read. 5stars as usual👍

great short story collection
really interesting to see some key events that happened outside the series
I recommend rereading them all as they are about minor characters mostly and I had to google the characters once or twice to remember who was who

Great short stories
I just love the first law world and this book gives an opportunity to explore some of the lesser characters in more detail. Also gives a different perspective on others that changes how you think of them. Steven Pacey is a great narrator.

Another 5 star book
After powering through the the first law books and world I needed any thing that kept me grounded in the world of the characters or Logen and Wyrin.
As always Joe and Steven deliver perfection.
I admit I skipped over the chapter that Joe read....He is a great writer, but after Steven, no one can impress
