Story
For more than two years, BBC Radio 4's The Archers ran a disturbing storyline centred on Helen Tichener's abuse at the hands of her husband Rob. Not the kind of abuse that leaves a bruise, but the sort of coercive control that breaks your spirit and makes it almost impossible to walk away. As she listened to the unfolding story, Helen Walmsley-Johnson was forced to confront her own agonising past. Helen's first husband controlled her life, from the people she saw to what was in her bank account.

Story
Evan Stark, founder of one of America's first battered women's shelters, shows how "domestic violence" is neither primarily domestic nor necessarily violent, but a pattern of controlling behaviors more akin to terrorism and hostage-taking. Drawing on court records, interviews, and FBI statistics, Stark details coercive strategies that men use to deny women their very personhood, from "beeper games" to food logs to micromanaging dress, speech, sexual activity, and work.

Story
Coercive control is a form of domestic violence experienced by millions of children. It involves a perpetrator using a range of tactics to intimidate, humiliate, degrade, exploit, isolate, and control a partner or family member. Some coercive control perpetrators use violence, others do not. Drawing on interviews with children and mothers who have experienced coercive control-based domestic violence, this book sheds light on the impacts of coercive control on children, how it is perpetrators who must be held accountable for those impacts, and how resistance by children and mothers occurs.

How does a feminist raise a son in a world that conditions boys into entitlement, privilege and power at the expense not just of girls' humanity but also their own? All boys start innocent, but by the time they are adolescents many of them will subscribe to a view of masculinity that is openly contemptuous of women and girls. This explosive new work will look at toxic masculinity and the closed ranks of brotherhood that shape an entitled, disrespectful and potentially dangerous idea of manhood.

A confirmation to your doubts
- By Isabelle Cox on 19-07-2019
Publisher's Summary
At the office of Safe Steps, Victoria's dedicated 24/7 family violence response call centre, phone counsellors receive a call every three minutes. Many women are repeat callers - on average, they will go back to an abusive partner eight times before leaving for good. 'You must get so frustrated when you think a woman's ready to leave and then she decides to go back,' I say. 'No,' replies one phone counsellor, pointedly. 'I'm frustrated that even though he promised to stop, he chose to abuse her again.'
Domestic abuse is a national emergency: one in four Australian women has experienced violence from a man she was intimate with. But too often we ask the wrong question: why didn’t she leave? We should be asking: why did he do it?
Investigative journalist Jess Hill puts perpetrators - and the systems that enable them - in the spotlight. See What You Made Me Do is a deep dive into the abuse so many women and children experience - abuse that is often reinforced by the justice system they trust to protect them. Critically, it shows that we can drastically reduce domestic violence - not in generations to come, but today.
Combining forensic research with riveting story-telling, See What You Made Me Do radically rethinks how to confront the national crisis of fear and abuse in our homes.
Winner of the 2020 Stella Prize.
Critic Reviews
"A shattering book: clear-headed and meticulous, driving always at the truth." (Helen Garner)
"One Australian a week is dying as a result of domestic abuse. If that was terrorism, we’d have armed guards on every corner." (Jimmy Barnes)
"Confronting in its honesty this book challenges you to keep reading no matter how uncomfortable it is to face the profound rawness of people’s stories. Such a well written book and so well researched. See What You Made Me Do sheds new light on this complex issue that affects so many of us." (Rosie Batty)

Powerful
Where to start... this book shines a light on what happens behind closed doors, the trauma and abuse suffered by so many. Jess takes us through the cold hard facts and uses personal stories to bring the stats to life.
Jess gave time to the victims and perpetrators which was so impactful. The raw emotion in her voice at times echoed my own heartbreak.
When all hope looks lost, when the system looks so broken there is no possibility for change Jess references leading practice in Scotland, Brazil & America. She shows where similar approaches have been applied in Bourke, NSW and the dramatic impact it had the local community.
I’m blown away by this book, at times I wondered if Jess was a social worker or clinical researcher so comprehensive is her understanding of this topic.
This book should be read in schools by every teenager, by every police cadet & uni student not just the social work, psych, law & healthcare students, by every newly elected official regardless of level/office, by every executive and board member who’s then challenged to look, really look at how their team behave, do they condone or endorse DV, what about the products and services etc. Then maybe do we have the chance to change.

Changing the world starts by reading this book
I am a mother of three boys. Everyday I look for ways to learn more about what it takes to raise decent humans. Listening to this book is a positive step in the right direction.
Love is not possession.
The author herself narrates this book. Her passion and heart ache are felt as she cries and gets angry. How wonderful it is to feel these emotions right along side her.

Shocking and enlightening
I must admit that though I have had some experience with domestic violence having grown up with a violent and emotionally abusive alcoholic mother, I truly did not understand coercive control until I read this book, even though it had clearly happened to someone I dearly love and, in hindsight I am so sorry that I failed to recognise what was happening and support. This book should be read by everyone connected with the dv sector and anyone who would like both to understand their own misconceptions and prejudices in relation to this issue and understand. This book has made me cry and feel deeply uncomfortable as it clearly and beautifully takes this issue apart. Well done Jess Hill.
