Story
Each of us has a dual nature: we are light (conscious) and dark (unconscious). The dark side of our personality - the “other,” the shadow side - is made up of what we think is our primitive, primal, negative impulses - our “existential kink.” Our existential kink also drives the dark or negative repeating patterns in our life: always choosing the abusive partner or boss, settling for less, thinking that we’re undeserving, not worthy. But it also is the source of our greatest power.

A daring approach to relationship growth
This book gave me a fresh new perspective on conflict, communication, sex and self development and How it's all connected. The biggest ahah I got was ...the biggest mistake we can make is avoiding conflict because we can use it to learn how to manage our own anxieties instead of needing our partner to sooth us, this setting them free and this can create fundamental change. Keeping the peace is actually risking the future of our relationship.

Incredibly well done
Excellent. Not a marriage guide, rather a guide to selfhood and how that is the foundation of all lasting relationships with others.

Amazing insight!
My wife recently separated from me due to ongoing marital struggles predominantly stemming from my inability to communicate and my lack of understanding of how relationships require work. I understand now that there was fear and anxiety that I was not willing to nor able to stand the message. This inevitably resulted in deeper issues of resentment etc and our current situation. This book has really helped me understand and reflect on our marriage and in particular my own sense of self worth and helped me to understand how my wife must have been feeling. Differentiation is such a strong and important concept. Definitely recommend this book.

LOVED iT
My life partner just shared this book with me. Sometimes we receive gifts that are much bigger than their single parts. This is what this was for me. First my relationship, then my lover loving me enough to share his desires with me, then the offering of a few pages of this book giving me the choice to seek further, then the listening, laughing, crying and absorbing the understanding that I'm not weird, then the growing over just a few hours, then the peace, then the excitement of listening again while laying with my lover, then..... Bliss, over and over again.... Thank you Annie

quasi-religious storytelling
Be warned that this has a lot of spiritual and religious references and foundation to it; that means a lot of what is spoken about to me sounded like pseudoscience, not rooted in empirical research or study. Great storytelling and some good points but I found much of it not pragmatic.

Life changing!
David Schnarch is changing my life. I was initially disappointed that this wasn’t the whole book, but honestly, this is a very substantial and highly impactful edited version, which is more than enough to get you started with the Passionate Marriage Approach. Schnarch’s clear, welcoming, and witty voice is such a gift. I recommend this audiobook to anyone who has ever been/will ever be in an intimate relationship. RIP David, you have helped so many.

This is not the book
I should have taken more time to read the description and was disappointed to realise this is not the Passionate Marriage book. It contains some valuable information but it's very brief and basically an overview of the book.
