Publisher's Summary

In the wake of the Dropsite Massacre at Isstvan V, the survivors of the Salamanders Legion searched long and hard for their fallen primarch, but to no avail. Little did they know that while Vulkan might have wished himself dead, he lives still...languishing in a hidden cell for the entertainment of a cruel gaoler, his brother Konrad Curze.

Enduring a series of hellish tortures designed to break his body and spirit, Vulkan witnesses the depths of the Night Haunter's depravity but also discovers something else - a revelation that could change the course of the entire war.

Heart Breaking

Vulkan' constant torture at the hands of his brother brings their relationship down to an almost too human level, making it both heart breaking and intense. And the performance from the narrator was breathtaking to say the least.

One of the rawest books in the series.

You'll see Vulkan gets both his mind and body torn open in this book, It turly captures the sense of loss and betrayal following the Istvaan 5 massacre, great edition to the series, 5 stars.

to meandering for me

let me preface this by saying I've been a salamander player for well over a decade, so I say this with a certain amount of disapointment. I dunno if it's because I have been binging horus heresy books or if it's more that I've never been a huge fan of Nick kymes writing style but this one felt pretty slow, didn't seem to cover a lot of ground, I didn't really connect with the characters and so when they died it didn't impact me at all.
