A vibrant and powerful epic set against an alternate Bronze Age, this tale of gods, men and monsters, conspiracy and war, is a rich, compelling and original tale from a master of the historical and fantasy genres. The people caught up in toils of the gods are merely trying to survive. Victims of vicious whims, trapped by their circumstances or pushed beyond what the mortal frame can bear, a handful of god-touched mortals—a scribe, a warlord, a dancer and a child - are about to be brought together in a conspiracy of their own.

Dragons Riders: The last noble warriors in the realm. Only heroes can embolden the ordinary. For centuries, millennia, the Dragon Riders galvanized generation after generation, adding Riders to their ranks and birthing dragons from their eggs. But there are no more heroes. War with the Andarens is like nothing the Riders, nor the armies of Erador, have ever faced. In the place of heroes, there are only soldiers now. Fodder for the machine of war. Story
Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

An ingenious adventure
- By Catherine Webb on 11-08-2022
Publisher's Summary
Forget George and the dragon. Forget Sir Lancelot and tales of knightly exploits. This is dirty, bloody work. This is violent, visceral action. This is a mercenary knight as you've never seen one before.
Twenty-eight florins a month is a huge price to pay for a man to stand between you and the Wild.
Twenty-eight florins a month is nowhere near enough when a wyvern's jaws snap shut on your helmet in the hot stink of battle, and the beast starts to rip the head from your shoulders.
But if standing and fighting is hard, leading a company of men - or, worse, a company of mercenaries - against the smart, deadly creatures of the Wild is even harder.
It takes all the advantages of birth, training, and the luck of the devil to do it.
The Red Knight has all three, he has youth on his side, and he's determined to turn a profit. So when he hires his company out to protect an abbess and her nunnery, it's just another job.
The abbey is rich, the nuns are pretty and the monster preying on them is nothing he can't deal with. Only it's not just a job. It's going to be a war....

A Great Read So Far
I usually hate too many POVs. I can even say I lost a bit of interest in while I was reading George Martin A Song of Fire and Ice series (don’t get me wrong I love the series). Somehow got hooked despite all of the povs it was all interesting. The main character is also very likable. I suggest this book to anyone who likes fantasy genre

BE AWARE If You are Looking For A New Series
The first two books are narrated excellently by Matthew Wolf.
From the Third book onward the Narrator is replaced and the performance/mixing/audio quality drops significantly. I had to abandon this series due to this change.
This is a real shame because the first two books were fantastic to listen to.

Great Story and a great narrator too!
I really enjoyed this book. The story was fantastic and well written with 'historical' accuracy in relation to knight armor and weapons it seems. Good battles and sorcery with lots of creatures! The narrator was brilliant. In fact, I would say this writer/narrator team are close to being as good as my favorites Abercrombie/Pacey but alas Cameron/Wolf seem to only have Book 2 together before it appears another narrator takes over. I will go on to Book 2 and will attempt Book 3 even though the narrator is apparently different and reviews are not good. For now, I can honestly say that this book/listen was wonderful!

Wonderful!
Excellent narration, the characters actually have their own voice and accents so you can really put your self into the story.
Most of the books I prefer to read are single pov or a few povs, how ever this book had many character pov it jumped between. I was happily surprised that I enjoyed it! It was skillfully written in a tight sequence so I never felt that parts were added to catch up to the main characters and the entire book was a nice and smooth read

A Red Knights battle against the wildest beasts
Although at the start i struggled with the narrative swip swapping of one story to the next of the characters in the story. i was able to grasp after a fashion the concept of how the author had structured his story and then began to enjoy listening but it definitely took longer than expected.
If you love Knights of valour and magic and victories won in the most against odds moments then this is the story for you and yes i like the fact that the story continues on in other books and have purchased the next installment of the Red Knight and his crews exciting journeys.

Laborious!
By the Gods - never have a met a book so in need of an edit. I'm blown away this was produced by a major publisher, frankly. To be fair, there's parts of this book that are excellent and the performance is mostly good, but this story goes on and on and on and on with battles that could be combined, romance that could easily be truncated, speeches that are so full of hyperbole and characters that go absolutely nowhere. As a fantasy reader of over 40 years, there is potential in this book, but a fearless and caring editor could have added so much to this.
In terms of the audio book, again, the lack of knowledge in the production does it no favours. There were two directors on this production, and neither could Google "trebuchet" to find out it's French and therefore the "t" is silent. Little things like that where pronunciation has been let slip (and this happens with multiple words - "wyvern" being another) takes a reader out of the moment. Lazy production, frankly.
Look. this book has some great moments. but it goes on and one to the point where it's difficult to care, in fact half way through I was counting down the hours until it was over, I may have even stopped listening.
Why couldn't this be better?

Cliches and the worst aspects of chivalry abound
If you enjoy complex, well written and innovative fantasy, DON’T LISTEN TO THIS AUDIOBOOK! And I’m a pretty tolerant reader/listener of fantasy, this is the first bad review I’ve ever wrote! So you can believe me when I say it’s bad!
Sorry to say I couldn’t even make it through the first book. The magic system was definitely intriguing, but the whole chivalrous knight thing was WAY over the top!!! The dialogue was painfully blunt and unimaginative, repeating itself in clunky ways and using simple, boring, repetitive language. No witty banter or enjoyable word play to be found.
The stereotypical roles of women and men was just straight up boring. Sure, back in the day things might have been like this, but have the courage to write a world not full of weak little women that use looks and sex to reward the big strong men who galavant across the world killing monsters. Seriously, cliches like men who’s honour has been injured and simply must react? Sigh.
Welcome to snoresville.
