Publisher's Summary

Following on from The Reality Dysfunction, The Neutronium Alchemist is the second epic novel in the Night's Dawn trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton.

The ancient menace has finally escaped from Lalonde, shattering the Confederation's peaceful existence. Those who succumbed to it have acquired godlike powers but now follow a far from divine gospel as they advance inexorably from world to world.

On planets and asteroids, individuals battle for survival against the strange and brutal forces unleashed upon the universe. Governments teeter on the brink of anarchy, the Confederation navy is dangerously overstretched, and a dark messiah prepares to invoke his own version of the final Night.

In such desperate times, the last thing the galaxy needs is a new and terrifyingly powerful weapon. Yet Dr Alkad Mzu is determined to retrieve the Alchemist - so she can complete her 30-year-old vendetta to slay a star. Which means Joshua Calvert has to find Dr Mzu and bring her back before the Alchemist can be reactivated.

But he's not alone in the chase, and there are people on both sides who have their own ideas about how to use the ultimate doomsday device.

"A vast improvement on the first"

Excellent evolution of the characters and solid speculative science. Improves on every aspect that was set up in the first book.

Terrible Australian accents, but very few outside of Australia get it right.

"why isn't this a TV series yet?"

so much vivid scifi detail. easy to spot the similar ideas used in his other series but still original.

"John Lee excellent as usual, but the plot rambles..."

I really enjoy Peter F Hamilton on audiobook – I've never had the stamina for the actual books! I've listened to all of the Commonwealth series and this Night's Dawn seemed like the next obvious step.

Overall I have enjoyed parts 1 and 2, but I felt that this one could have arrived at its conclusion several hundred pages (hours!!) sooner than it did. That said, as usual it was a solid performance from John Lee agin and he really kept it moving.

Looking forward to Part 3...after a break!

A great book completely ruined by poor editing. Making difficult to follow and painfully confusing. Put some gaps in this you plonkers. I'm going to score the performance as bad but I mean the editing.

"very nice scifi, a classic in making"

like in other books by Hamilton, characters are often.larger than life. but other than that, i can find no fault. especially i like the wording. while events are grand, wording does not degenerate to ridiculous stream of hyperboles. i really these books.

Narrator is great, wide variety of accents and voices although his Indian and African accents often interchange mid sentence. Can't begrudge him that though, overall a stellar job! Great book.

As usual an excellent tale. Up and down, mysteries developing and unfolding. Where death can be a new beginning. But not necessarily a good one.

"Book 2 Well you have 2"

Well it seems fairly pointless as there would be no point in not listening to this after being hooked on book 1 then you are into the 100+ hrs of this epic tri ology. Sometime a little wordy but still escape to another universe and consider the message what and how do you consider the party that humans will take in the universe

    "What a mess!"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

There's the germ of an excellent story in here somewhere. I made it through the first book, and am on the verge of giving in here. Hamilton's relentless (and frankly clumsy) shifting of perspectives means the reader is left in a near-constant state of confusion as to who is who, which characters are central and which are peripheral. By the time you've been introduced to yet another person you don't care about, you've barely registered not caring about the previous 300 characters you've been introduced to. A real contrast with someone like Ian M Banks, who limits himself to a few characters and manages to create universes of similar scale.

What did you like best about this story?

There's no lack of ambition here, the universe-building is hugely coherent and plausible.

Would you be willing to try another one of John Lee’s performances?

John Lee sounds like a pompous Vicar doing his telephone voice. He just sounds like he's faking gravitas, and it's an awful effect. The best readers some element of magic and clarify the story at their very best, Lee only serves to muddy. I'd steer clear of Lee again.

What character would you cut from The Neutronium Alchemist?

LOL, as the saying goes. Pick any one of the several hundreds I don't care about...
