The Minister of Chance is a wildly exciting, picaresque fantasy adventure and a brilliant, Swiftian satire on politics and religion. It boasts Hollywood production values, an orchestral score and a staggeringly accomplished cast: Jenny Agutter, Jed Brophy, Lauren Crace, Paul Darrow, Philip Glenister, Tamsin Greig, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, and the beautifully inflected Julian Wadham as the titular minister.

Originally made on an overdraft, the remaining episodes were funded by fans who turned this groundbreaking radiophonic masterpiece into a multiaward-winning cult phenomenon.

A world not our own: Ambassador Durian of the technologically advanced nation of Sezuan is sent to talk peace with the King of the medieval backwater nation of Tanto. However, the King rebuffs Durian's overtures of friendship, and things take a turn for the very, very sinister.

At a nearby inn, barmaid Kitty's routine of fighting, abusing customers, and avoiding personal hygiene is disrupted by the arrival of a cloaked stranger. Her routine is further disrupted when she follows him into the forest, through a ghostly doorway, over the frost bridge between worlds, and into an adventure encompassing invasions, machiavellian political scheming and conversations with frog gods at the entrance to the Underworld.

Put on your headphones, and spend your next commute in another world. You won't want to leave.

Audio needs balancing desperately!

I really wanted to love this. The cast of actors that are part of this is amazing. First, realize this is an audio series, not a book. Imagine the radio dramas of days gone by. I had some difficulty following the story line with such a huge cast of characters, many of whose voices were confusing. I couldn't always tell who was talking. And if I had a drink for every time Kitty says "Oy!" I would be too drunk to write this post. But my biggest complaint is how loud the background sounds were, frequently making it hard to understand the actors and proving very distracting. Ok, we got it, they're by a stream, you can turn down the volume on the running water a bit. I found the ambient sounds and music so loud and distracting I had to force myself to listen at times. Overall, the actors were great, the story was ok, but the post production needs a lot of work.

SPOILT BY LOUD AMATEUR ACTING BY THE MAIN CHILD ACTRESS WHO SHOUTS HER WAY THROUGH

Forced myself to listen to this good production which is utterly spoiled and almost unlistenable due to the immature acting of the main child actress who does not act she SHOUTS all the way through. Very off putting and makes what would be a good storyline very painful to listen to.

The is child needs to go back to drama school. The first thing I and my colleagues learnt at drama school was NOT TO SHOUT but ACT. I blame the producers and the director for hiring such an amateur.
Will not be recommending this awful production to my friends, they would be insulted.

Like watching a movie with your ears

Like my headline says it's literally like watching a movie... But with your ears. Dan Freeman, the voice actors and rest of a team did an amazing job taking us into a world where science is outlawed and magic rules. Highly recommended.

little idea what was going on

hard to follow, and ended up just letting it play on to the end without paying much attention to the story

Innovative, but pricey for what it is

There's more than a touch of Hitchhiker's guide about this story -- interplanetary bureaucracy, parallel worlds, science and religion, none of it taking itself too seriously. The production is amazing -- it's billed as an "audio movie," and has the same kind of production values as a good move. The voice actors -- who are all (I think) "proper" actors in their own right -- are fantastic, and the music -- mostly orchestral -- is well chosen.

I have to admit that I couldn't make all that much of the story itself. Too much happens, too quickly and without much explanation. I will almost certainly have to listen to it again to figure out the plot but, frankly, that won't be any hardship.

Pure enjoyable escapism

Two hours of challenging, thought provoking escapism. Beautifully crafted, impeccably acted and thoroughly absorbing. Masterful.
