Publisher's Summary

A thousand years ago evil came to the land and has ruled with an iron hand ever since. The sun shines fitfully under clouds of ash that float down endlessly from the constant eruption of volcanoes. A dark lord rules through the aristocratic families, and ordinary folk are condemned to lives in servitude, sold as goods, labouring in the ash fields. But now a troublemaker has arrived, and there is rumour of revolt. A revolt that depends on criminal that no-one can trust and a young girl who must master Allomancy - the magic that lies in all metals.

Epic and engrossing

I was first introduced to Brandon Sanderson through his contribution to the Wheel of Time series and was keen to see what his unique view of fantasy would be.

I was not disappointed. The writing style is potentially something to get used to if you like things fast paced - there is a tonne of description, character and plot building. Once you get into the rhythm though I loved it.

I'm really into narrator Michael Kramer now, at first his voice irked me a little, but again, once you pushed through a little he is able to put colour and character into the story without it being distracting.

The Final Empire is a really unique, interesting spin on fantasy, yes there are most of the usual tropes, but in all I found it exciting, I loved the story line and most of all I loved the surprises. I couldn't stop listening.

A great new Fantasy epic

I travel a lot for work, and am always on the lookout for new authors and new stories to listen to on the road. I stumbled across Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series, and having listened to "The Final Empire", and a goodly way through the second in the series "The Well of Ascension", I'm at the stage where I just want to take the long way around; go around the corner one more time just to hear some more! Awesome story, brilliantly told! I look forward to hearing more from this fantastic author.

Original world and storyline.

Great detailed world and indepth characters. It started a bit slow but the detail was worth the explaining, as the intricacies politics and twists later in the story were worth the wait. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

good

My pithy words cannot do justice to HOW MUCH I love this series. I first found this book because I searched 'fantasy with female protagonist'. This hit every note for me. It feels so unique and unusual, among a sea of fantasy books which are all unique and unusual to me (I am easy to please). I was captivated and Brandon Sanderson tells his readers a story which- for want of a better way of phrasing- really seems to care for the reader. Questions were raised and, get this, not forgotten by the author! Reading this was sad, desolate, hopeful, endearing, and inspiring. But most of all it made me feel safely held in the hand of a masterful story teller, who truly cared for his characters. I'm being sappy but I don't care this book launched me back into a reading obsession I had neglected for almost a decade and it has a very special place in my heart.

A dark world FULL of colourful characters.

Sanderson builds a dark and detailed world, brimming with colourful and memorable characters.

The story builds until you are enveloped and captivated by its mist.

Very enjoyable.

Just so so.

Many clichés atop one another to make up a story where "Magneto-Spider-people" fight for supremacy in a post dystopian fantasy-western meets spy/steampunk.
For me; the novelty of these genres mixing just didn't pull it over the line, unfortunately. Kramer does what he can. But it was just... boring.

Felt like a first draft

I really wanted to love this, but it was frustratingly repetitive and full of unnecessary exposition. Too much is said and not shown, and then said again a few chapters later, but for all that not a lot actually happens. The characters didn't feel convincing and the ending was anticlimactic. A lot of cliches are used for the sake of filling out paragraphs or dialogue when they don't actually make sense in context. For a first book it's okay, but I don't understand the five star reviews.

Absorbing tale

Worthwhile persevering through the slowish start as the characters ger fleshed out well and the story becomes quite absorbing. I thought the narration was terrific, really set the mood perfectly

Enjoyable read

This was my first Brandon Sanderson book, of which I enjoyed and look forward to listening to another one soon. A bit of a slow start, but once into it, it traveled at a good pace, and was keen to see what will happen to Vin next.
I loved the sound of the narrator's voice (almost soothing),Michael Kramer, and will hunt out more of his narrating.
