Publisher's Summary

All Blythe Sol ever wanted was to be a normal girl. Yet, her dreams of following in her father's footsteps by joining the military after graduation are crushed when nuclear war comes to the United States in the year 4006. Tens of thousands are killed in a series of attacks on many major cities, while thousands more are left injured from the devastation of the blasts, or terminally ill from the effects of radiation.

When the government offers the sick and injured a second chance as part of the Restoration Project, how could they refuse? Hoping to put her life back together after the blasts take both her arm and her eye, Blythe enrolls in the program filled with hope. She never expects that the bionic additions will change her life so drastically. When it is discovered that those outfitted with the robotic parts have become enhanced beyond the limits of ordinary human ability, normal can never exist for her again.

The Bionics become targets of the government, as fear of them spreads across the nation, further enflamed by media propaganda and political conspiracy. Forced to go into hiding or face execution, society's outcasts band together to form the Restoration Resistance - an underground rebellion which Blythe becomes a part of in order to survive. She could never imagine that joining them would thrust her at the forefront of an imminent revolution, or that it would put her in a confusing tug-of-war between two of her fellow soldiers; Gage Bronson, the mysterious new addition to the Resistance, and Dax Janner, her best friend. Even though Gage is rapidly capturing her heart, she is forced to face the possibility that her feelings for Dax might just go beyond friendship. However, with impending war and the threat of death hanging over her head, Blythe hardly has time to worry about anything as trivial as a love life.

    "Ah-mazing, gripping, we'll narrated "

OMG, this narrator is phenomenal. Accents, male voice, female voice, her intensity; just wow! Alicia Michaels story is amazing and with the narrator it truly came to life. I will definitely be picking up others from both this author and narrator.

"Great Techological Dystopian Story and Heroes"
Who was your favorite character and why?

I think Gage was my favorite character. His understanding and support for the Bionics should have been more difficult for him given his background. Yet he gives the resistance everything he can. Nothing he is asked to do is considered beneath him. He is an unexpected hero.

What does Marissa Clay bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Marissa brought emotion to the characters. Between the story and her narration, I found myself glued to the story. I wanted to know what was next and did not want to stop reading. Marissa's voice is a good fit for this story. Her narration also kept me in the story making it easier to listen for hours on end.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Gage's encounter with his sister moved me the most. The opportunity to let her know that both he and her daughter are okay is great. I just wish that he had been able to share the whole truth with her at the time. The fact that he needed to hide some information, however, just made the moment even more moving.

    Any additional comments?

This is a very good story complimented by a very good narration. Together they make the book a joy to read.

I really enjoyed Alicia's world building. She did a good job of creating a culture to support the plot of the story. There is a leap of faith required, but what is presented supports the story. I am not sure I would have guessed the time to be as far in the future as indicated, but the level of technology required to accomplish much of what is presented does require the story to take place in the future.

The Nuclear attacks described in the book brought me back to the cold war era. I remember how we all worried about the possibility of nuclear war. The topic was discussed in school, at church youth functions and in the news. The way the topic was introduced and utilized in this story brought back the feelings I had back then. The story is not about that, but having those feelings brought back into the forefront of my mind made it more relevant to me.

The main characters in the book do a lot of soul searching and growing in the story. This allows us to get to know them better and makes them more complex. Each of the major characters has a flashback to show where they were when the nuclear attack occurred. This is a good use of flashbacks. It allows us to understand some of what drives the character without a lot of explanation.

There is a "cliffhanger" at the end of this story, but it's the type of cliffhanger I actually enjoy in a series. There is a full story included in the book, then we are left with something to wonder about at the end. The book does not just end for no apparent reason, rather it is wrapped up. At the same time, we get a hint of the next story. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Overall, a very good story! Definitely worth a credit.

Thanks Alicia for the opportunity to read this book.

    "Great sci-fi first in series"
If you could sum up The Bionics in three words, what would they be?

    draws you in

What did you like best about this story?

it's not an entirely new concept, yet it is original and has enough suspense to keep you guessing and adventure to keep you in suspense - all with a hint of just sexy enough romance sprinkled in. Kept me listening and engaged and I happily listened to it all over a weekend

Have you listened to any of Marissa Clay’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    no

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

At first I wasn't so taken with the narration - I liked the beginning of the story though and figured it was worth continuing listening...then before I knew it I was engrossed in the story, enjoying the narrators portrayal of the characters which had become much stronger as the novel progressed. At the end I'd say aside from the very start, it was a really good narration.
The story is good, flows well and keeps you interested as it unfolds and the end...well, it's a series and it does an excellent job of ensuring you'll want to get the next book! I pretty much listened in two sittings over a weekend - kept me interested all the way through

    Any additional comments?

I was gifted a book for an honest review. I'm not a reviewer who will say I like something if I don't - I liked this book - good post apocalyptic sci-fi similar in nature (but not story) to the Divergent series or the Hunger Games. I'll most likely buy the next one

    she handles action really well

    Story
    "Not the terminator"

This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of AudiobookBoom dot com.

PSA: be warned there is a cliff hanger ending. The cyborg / human mixes interested me, but I was a little bit let down by it. Maybe because I just came out from reading the Lunar Chronicles. Despite the techno-background of the story, the plot doesn't really focus on it.

There were three different character POV. personally, I'm not too fond of having two different POV, and three didn't make it any easier. Personally I prefer female narrators, so I'm fine there wasn't a guy narrating the other two parts, but YMMV. For most of the book, the narrator did great. She did repeat herself a few times, and the audio quality was a little shoddy in some places. I suspect she might not have an actual booth.

    "Dystopian YA/NA with epic proportions"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Bionics to be better than the print version?

I've only read the audiobook version

What did you like best about this story?

YA, scifi and featured a PoC heroine.

What about Marissa Clay’s performance did you like?

She was a little stiff, but I guess that made sense based on the bionic nature
