Publisher's Summary

A superb novel set in classic Stephen King territory - a small new England town about to be engulfed by terror.

Turn off the television - in fact, why don't you turn off all the lights except for the one over your favourite chair? - and we'll talk about vampires here in the dim. I think I can make you believe in them.

Stephen King, from the introduction. Salem's Lot is a small New England town with the usual quota of gossips, drinkers, weirdos and respectable folk. Of course there are tales of strange happenings - but not more than in any other town its size.

Ben Mears, a moderately successful writer, returns to the Lot to write a novel based on his early years, and to exorcise the terrors that have haunted him since childhood. The event he witnessed in the house now rented by a new resident. A newcomer with a strange allure. A man who causes Ben some unease as things start to happen: a child disappears, a dog is brutally killed - nothing unusual, except the list starts to grow.

Soon surprise will turn to bewilderment, bewilderment to confusion and finally to terror....

Great Listen

King's second book after Carrie, and definitely worth a listen. Very clever composition and writing with familiar characters and a certain nostalgic charm. Would recommend.

a lot of waffling

Good story, loved the mini series as a kid. I just find that King fills a lot of pages with detailed waffle.

Fantastic.

Better than I remember when I read it 30 yrs ago. Early SK when he was at the peak of his powers. Some language that reminds me of Cormack so beautifully is it written. 😀

an incredible tale marred only by its time.

sensational novel, well written, well read. the 1970s were crazy misogynistic though. you can scream "a product of its time" all you want, but a throw away like about how a husband has beaten and raped his wife every night doesn't go down well for me.

if you are willing to constantly remind yourself "it was the 70s get over it" it's an incredible experience.

classic story, great narration

a Stephen king classic.
all tied together witha great voice that drew the listener in but kept the voices quirky, such as the Sherif, Matt and barlo himself.
really enjoyed this listen

Not King’s best & still 100% worth it

Wasn’t AS engaging as some of King’s other stories, but still incredibly interesting & chilling in a way I haven’t experienced with “vampire” stories.
