Publisher's Summary

As the flames of treachery spread throughout the Imperium, Horus plots to subvert or destroy all those who would stand against him.

On Mars, home world of the Mechanicum priesthood, the great manufactory-cities have long produced much of the weaponry required for the expeditionary fleets across the galaxy - making the world invaluable to whoever controls it in the coming war.

Now, the Warmaster's agents begin to stoke the fires of rebellion, turning the loyalist forges and the mighty Titan Legions against one another. And, with whispers spreading of an ancient terror lurking beneath the Red Planet's surface, the Dark Mechanicum rises....

This book is a pleasure to listen too, and its essential for understanding the nature of the Mechanicus, and its role in The Horus Heresy

Not bad!

It not best HH book (it is no Betrayer, Know No Fear, Master of Mankind or The First Heretic) but it is also not the worst either (which IMHO is Vulkan Lives...a truely dreadful book). But still...worth a listen! Toby Longworth is a great narrator as always.

Starts off slowly, ends with a bang!

There really wasn't a single characters POV that I was not invested in. There is a short lull right before the ending that is a little tedius, but man does it set up the best ending in the HH so far. "Ends with a bang" is an understatement.

The narrator; Toby Longworth, initially seemed out of place as his style is so very different to the previous narrators in this series, but he quickly became my favourite so far.

Best book in the series!!

This is a must listen! Good from beginning to end. Some HH books take a while to warm up, but this one keeps the fires of Mars hot the whole way through! Go for it, you won’t be disappointed.

As always interesting but

This was the only book so far that seemed to drag out and having boring lulls, but I mean that’s probably to be expected of the Mechanicum. But it was still worth to for the lore and to better understand the Mechanicum and their relationship with the imperium.

Awesome voiceover

The way this guy is able to manipulate his voice really makes you think there’s more than one narrator. The story continues to build and is great as always

Thank the God Emperor GW put this on Audiable!

I enjoyed this far more than I thought I would. Definitely one of the stronger books in the series, even though I am not much of a Mechanicum fan. Correction, I wasn't much of a Mechanicum fan.

The Omnissiah approves this book!

This is one of my favourite Horus Heresy novels and tells a tale of the fate of the Mechanicum of Mars at the start of the heresy.

This isn't a space marine story but instead focuses on a variety of characters on Mars. These characters make the book and there are some who I really warmed to and the story is well paced and blends action and intrigue really well. For the fans of the titan legions these feature prominently in this story as well. Like Legion, this book demonstrates how rich the fictional setting of the Horus Heresy is by crafting a tale outside the Astartes.

The audiobook performance by Toby Longworth is delivered with style much like in the Horus Rising trilogy.

The best yet

Best book so far in the series, highly recommended. Toby Longworth is the king of sci fi narration, his work on Peter Hamilton and Iain M Banks books was outstanding and he brings that same brilliance here. Anyone getting a good sci fi book narrated needs to look no further, whatever he costs pay it, the guy elevates the books to a level beyond what was on the page. When hes working with a book like this where the material is already fantastic its an absolute joy. The depths of the mechanicum, I wasn't sure what to expect going in, how much of a side tale this would be, how much of interest would there be to explore in the mechanicum… My goodness, its an epic piece of the ongoing saga, 10 out of 10.

Not the best...not the worst.

Book was well performed but i found the story lacking any real depths. There was very generic combat and 'suspence' but i just found that there wasnt anythine reslly exciting or intriguing which is a real shame because its the first book in the series to focus completly on the mechanicum anf in particular the Red Planet.....The whole dragon fiasco seemed pretty pointless too.

A facinating and exciting look into the Mechanicum

The best book in the series so far.

It delves deep into the individual thoughts and more broadly the culture of the Adepts of the red planet.
