Publisher's Summary

When magic is up, electricity dies, cars stall, and skyscrapers tumble; when it's down, phones and guns work, and defensive spells can't protect your house from the creatures who stalk the streets. Equally dangerous are the competing factions of The Pack - a highly organized and military clan who governs Atlanta's were-bears, -wolves, and -hyenas - versus the Masters of the Dead, power and knowledge-hungry necromancers whose minds control hordes of blood-crazed vampires.

This is home to Kate Daniels, a mercenary who investigates when things get out of hand. Kate likes her sword a little too much and has a hard time controlling her mouth. But when her guardian is murdered, she must choose between doing nothing and staying safe, or pursuing the dangerous entity who killed him. Kate is way out of her league; but who ever said the right choice was easy?

Liked the narrator and made me think about where they are from

I originally read the book a long time ago so was good to get back into the series through audiobook. I wasn’t expecting the accent but I liked it and guess that makes sense but never considered it when I was reading it myself. This is a great series with a great story and great cast of characters. I would recommend this series.

This series is a Fav.

I enjoyed Magic Bites even more in audio - I wish the whole series was available in AU (currently only the first 4 are - hopefully that changes in the future).

I enjoyed the performance of the narrator more throughout the story - she grew on me.

Brilliant Authors!

Love these guys, though this book is more grungy and serious than my fav's I still enjoyed it. Narration is very even so easy to hear in a noisier environment or on road trips (less whispering etc)

The narrator talks in Italic

Maybe the story is actually good, I might read the book instead of continuing this series here. The tittle is exactly that, the narrator talks in italic, the way she read in the accent and tone of voice, everything feels like it's underline in italic. Imagine reading a huge paragraph in italic, it will get frustrating quickly, but the whole book, it's too much.

I get uncomfortable with the strange sexual talks, it's just so random and weird.. the narrator doesn't have a lot of voice options and they all sound the same after awhile, so it's so hard to identify the characters, or follow what's going on.

Disappointing voice

So sad that one of my favourite books was made boring and bland by a bad actor.

Not for me

While I love this genre I just couldn't get into this particular book. While the premise of the world was interesting, there was no narrative on how our world became the one depicted. There were a lot of characters and they cluttered the storyline. The constant and pervasive theme of sexual violence was... odd. Finally I wasn't in love with the narration either. Thinking it was me I stopped half way through and started the entire story again hoping I missed something. While I built enough momentum to finish, I finished it feeling underwhelmed and unconnected to the characters. I am sure this series gets better, but I'm unwilling to commit to more. Not a bad book, just not a great one.
