It was Vera’s idea to buy the Itza. The “world’s most advanced smart speaker!” didn’t interest Thiago, but Vera thought it would be a bit of fun for them amidst all the strange occurrences happening in the condo. It made things worse. You wouldn’t think events happening years apart, at points in the solar system hundreds of millions of miles distant, would have anything to do with each other. When she was six, Daphne was taken into a neighbor’s tool shed and came within seconds of never coming out alive. Most of the scars healed. Except for the one that went all the way through. You wouldn’t think that the serial murders of children and the one who got away would have any connection with the strange fate of one of Jupiter’s moons.

Publisher's Summary
New York Times best-selling author Mira Grant, author of the renowned Newsflesh series, returns with a novel that takes us to a new world of ancient mysteries and mythological dangers come to life.
The ocean is home to many myths,
But some are deadly....
Seven years ago the Atargatis set off on a voyage to the Mariana Trench to film a mockumentary bringing to life ancient sea creatures of legend. It was lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a tragedy.
Now a new crew has been assembled. But this time they're not out to entertain. Some seek to validate their life's work. Some seek the greatest hunt of all. Some seek the truth. But for the ambitious young scientist Victoria Stewart, this is a voyage to uncover the fate of the sister she lost.
Whatever the truth may be, it will be found only below the waves.
But the secrets of the deep come with a price.

Fantastic book, Voice acting can be hit or miss
I really enjoyed this book from start to finish! The story, characters are all fantastic, and was completely taken away by how well the book is written. If you enjoy horror, this book is a must!
My only criticism is the voice acting. I am Australian, and when I heard the accent for the Australian, I was completely unimpressed. It was as if you walked up to any American and asked them to give you their best Australian accent. It was that bad. However the rest of the book was narrated pretty well. But it definitely doesn't ruin the experience and I still highly recommend it!

pretty great
other than the narrator's butchery of the Queensland accent, my accent, this book was a great way to kill a day during a typical QLD Christmas heatwave. That bloody accent though - it sounded South African. And her French sounded Slavic. But with a bit of work she could fix that because I thought she was a pretty great narrator. and when it comes to audio books, I could happily listen to the fine print on a cereal packet if it was read by the right person. like Stephen Fry, he'd nail a cereal box soliloquy.
in regards the book itself, it was well written well paced and, surprisingly, was about "mermaids" or "sirens" and it didn't suck. Would read more from this author, for sure.

Throw another mer on the barbie!
An interesting and enjoyable read, loved the sassy tone of writing, and the narration was fantastic (excepting the butchering of the Australian accent...as an Aussie, I was thoroughly confused - it sounded South African at times, then Russian). Pacing was excellent, great build up, end was fast but not necessarily rushed.
I did find the characters frustrating at times, with some of these scientists (we are supposing to be very smart) having made hypothesis earlier in the story; when these theories are seen happening in real time, the same scientists act as though they could not have conceived of such a turn of events. Odd. And being very slow to reach conclusions which as the reader, knowing what the characters know, I feel were very obvious. Felt a bit like the characters playing dumb at times, which was frustrating. I get the dramatic tension thing, but this was jarring.
Some of the dialogue was also a bit campy.
Tori was a fantastic character, and I loved her story.

Brilliant mer horror!
I’ve always loved stories about mermaids, so my feelings on this book may be a bit biased.
The pace of the story was great, voice acting was fantastic and the overall performance was 10/10. I really loved all parts of this book and only wish it could have been longer.

Solid, Interesting Novel.
I really enjoyed the diversity of this book, and the way disabled characters have their strengths highlighted. It's much nicer as an autistic person to have an autistic character portrayed in a well rounded and more optimistic way, than always negative.
The premise of the novel was interesting and unfolded well. My only issue was that sometimes characters seemed to react so slowly or weirdly (in my opinion) to what was clearly an emergency that it made the pace a little bizarre.
Lakin did a great performance, inflected well and was good at heightening emotion. The accents did not land well though. They were a bit too strong and, as an Australian, hard to listen to.
I'd recommend this novel for anyone looking for a character driven marine science mystery with a solid splash of horror, especially toward the end.

Fantastic
Hooked from the start, fantastic story, great descriptive writing, fabulous narration, the only negative was that I wasn’t a fan of the Aussie accent (I’m from Australia), but it wasn’t a huge negative. Would highly recommend this book.

Caution, mythical creatures ahead
Loved the portrayal of mermaids as the creatures of the deep luring sailors to their death, as they should be. Story was more suspenseful than horror. Loved the scientific aspect of the mermaids as if they were real creatures today.
Did find the beginning was a little slow & the ending seemed really rushed. But loved this story & just another reason to stay out of the ocean.
Christine Lakin did a great job on narration, although her accents were more miss than hit.
