Publisher's Summary

Fifty years after Steve Stuart and his friends captured an alien starship, the Solar Union is a thriving interstellar power while Earth is increasingly backward and falling into barbarism. For two youngsters from Earth, the Solar Union offers the only chance they will ever have to make something of their lives.

But humanity's involvement in Galactic affairs has not gone unnoticed. The enigmatic masters of the universe have put together a fleet to crush the upstart humans before they can threaten the precarious balance of power. Pushed to the limits, the Solar Union must fight to defend its freedom - and the existence of the human race.

Contemporary telling of current societal currents.

I have been re-listening to this series for the umptieth time and I find it captivating each time, discovering new nuances every time I listen to it.
This book strikes a resounding warning for what we are facing in today’s society, as it is in the mid-2020
Pivotal to this are the non-compulsory lessons at the academy, in particular, the “Divide and Conquer” chapter.
I believe Mr. Nuttall has it correct; we currently have pressure to move into a society where you are judged by the colour of your skin, religious inclination and so on, where one's Identity is their value, not what they believe nor their actions.
It seems to me that the famous “I have a Dream” speech by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr has been long forgotten…or it is purposely ignored.
I hope this is one work of fiction that doesn’t becomes reality….
"Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it."
Great story, Christian Rummel is a great narrator, not quite sure why he is later replaced by Jeffrey Kafer, mind you he's also a great narrator, but I believe Christian had the characters just right, the right groove, if it makes sense.

loved this book hard to put it down.

This book has inspired me to engage in more and I'm looking forward to the next one. it is an action packed and philosophical look at human interaction with it's own kind and other species they encounter.

political agenda

Less soap box and manifesto and the worthwhile points would have been taken more seriously.
