Story
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Story
It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs - once thought of almost as gods - were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

Publisher's Summary
Second novel in the brilliant series from the bestselling author of Prince of Thorns.
In Mystic Class Nona Grey begins to learn the secrets of the universe. But so often, knowing the truth just makes our choices harder. Before she leaves the Convent of Sweet Mercy, Nona must choose her path and take the red of a Martial Sister, the grey of a Sister of Discretion, the blue of a Mystic Sister or the simple black of a Bride of the Ancestor, entailing a life of prayer and service.
Standing between her and these choices are the pride of a thwarted assassin, the ambition of a would-be empress wielding the Inquisition like a blade, and the vengeance of the empire’s richest lord.
As the world narrows around her, and her enemies attack her using the very system she has sworn to, Nona must forge her own path in spite of the pulls of friendship, revenge, ambition, and loyalty.
In all this only one thing is certain. There will be blood.

Truely captivating
I have listened to a great number of books in the past year or so and read many in my life, these two novels have been very much among my favourites. So many of the fantasy books I have listened to have always contained endless rehashing of content from previous books, perhaps it is done as filler content or as a way to update people who have had significant distance of time between series editions but either way I found it to be very frustrating and unnecessary, none of this is done by this author which i found to be quite refreshing. I very much recommend this book series especially as it contains so many strong, intelligent and inspiring young women in lead roles and hope there are much more to come. As a final note I did also really like that it offered quality characters with alternate sexual preference and physical ability, shining a positive light on difference without playing to horrible stereotypes.

Great female-focussed adventure
My favourite thing about this series is that it's quite gritty SFF with a range of female leads; both heroes and villains, and the characters are well-drawn and complex. There's also a whole load of epic action scenes, which is always fun to listen to on a dreary commute. Grey Sister picks up where Red Sister left off; you definitely need to listen to the first to understand the sequel. The girls advance into grey class, and the convent comes under threat; although as always, the abbess is making plans and weaving webs. There's a majorly expanded role for Sister Kettle, and she and Abbess Glass both get POV chapters, which is great.
The narration is excellent; completely enthralling, with a range of accents used to delineate characters (although, they all make sense in the context of the story and aren't jarring). Definitely worth getting into the series if you like epic/high fantasy (this book has some SF elements but has more of a fantasy "feel") and characters who are willing to fight to the bitter end for what they think is right.

I've listened to "red sister" and "grey sister"
and both books are an epic tale full of character growth, adventure in an amazing unique and wonderful world full of magics, gruesome violence, back stabing, mindgames and political monopoly. Mark Lawrence has continued to get better and better in his already remarkable writing ability.
Helen duff is a great narrator, perfect for the characters in this book. she allows you to slip away into the world smoothly.

Story picks up pace
Loved the second book & totally hooked now! The characters are complex and distinctive. Keto was a great addition to the story line, I'm hoping he'll be back! Strong friendship themes, nasty villains, tricky situations and an interesting magic source make this a great fantasy series! Well thought out plot, Well done Mark Lawrence 👏🏼🌟

engaging
Follows on effortlessly from the first book. Nona must choose her path and take the red of a Martial Sister, the grey of a Sister of Discretion, the blue of a Mystic Sister or the simple black of a Bride of the Ancestor - such an engaging trilogy - bloody, captivating, fun reading!

Completely absorbed
This was even better than the first one, I have a better grasp on who, what and where now. Narrator is my favourite “go to” for calming my mind. She is brilliant. It’s a true work of art and great imagination that feels very empowering to be a part of. Love it.
