Publisher's Summary

Bled dry by interminable warfare, infighting and bloody confrontations with Lord Anomander Rake and his Tiste Andii, the vast, sprawling Malazan empire simmers with discontent. Even its imperial legions yearn for some respite. For Sergeant Whiskeyjack and his Bridgeburners and for Tattersail, sole surviving sorceress of the Second Legion, the aftermath of the siege of Pale should have been a time to mourn the dead. But Darujhistan, last of the Free Cities of Genabackis, still holds out - and Empress Lasseen's ambition knows no bounds. However, it seems the empire is not alone in this great game. Sinister forces gather as the gods themselves prepare to play their hand.

Conceived and written on an epic scale, Gardens of the Moon is a breathtaking achievement - a novel in which grand design, a dark and complex mythology, wild and wayward magic and a host of enduring characters combine with thrilling, powerful storytelling to resounding effect. Acclaimed by writers, critics and readers alike, here is the opening chapter in what has been hailed a landmark of epic fantasy: the awesome The Malazan Book of the Fallen.

"Confusing to start but by the end it has you"

Hard to get into because at the start it reads like you have come in mid series expecting you to understand what is going on and jumps around a lot. By the when you know
the characters and have some idea what is going on you love it

"Potential. But not for the inattentive listener."

The writing drops you into the story's setting quite blind. Names fly around in a flurry and your immediate struggle is to come to terms with that setting-a struggle which should feel natural enough to the reader at around the halfway or second third of the recording. This is not to say that the plot will leave you flummoxed during those two thirds, simply that there is a great deal of information about the setting to consume. The story then slows down a lot at this point, and you realise that the "drop in" was intentionally done to make the "buzz" of interest more effective.
The issue, as you continue reading, will be whether or not you find the characters interesting enough to justify the plot moving so slowly after becoming accustomed to Mr. Erikson's storytelling style. Personally, I found that the mythos itself is interesting, but that the characters behind whom we are positioned were a 50/50.
Overall, it was certainly enough to say that I will be checking out the next instalment- but I honestly hope that the plot picks up, again, therein.

"A great performance of an average book"

I struggled to finish this book. It jumps around from character to character so much that you don't feel wrapped up in the story. That said, it was brilliantly read. I will keep going with the series because I have heard great things but I hope it gets easier. I wouldn't say this book was well written compared to others I have read.

    "solid fantasy."

while I found the book really difficult to follow at times it is nonetheless a good fantasy story. I found the way uses magic to be unique and the theistic elements to be a very interesting take on everything.

I did find myself having to look various aspects of the book up online in order to get a better understanding, but thanks to the wiki and malazan subreddit this was an easy task, despite the spelling of different words.

"Part 1 of Gardena of the Moon"

I've read a few chapters of this book a few months ago, and decided to move to audiobook, because I felt I'd get a better understanding of the book this way.

I've really enjoyed the first portion of the book. The splendid reader, keeps me attentive by changing his voice for each character.

    Any additional comments?

Bought the first 3 books in the series, but didnt make it much into the 2nd. Too many characters are included without any sort of introduction, making many sequences where I have no idea who is talking. The plot is a bit all over the place with no sense of a direction. I just found myself bored.

    "Great start to a series."

Looking for something to follow Joe Abercrombie's First Law trilogy I found several reviews for this series and it sounded just what I was looking for. It was. Interesting characters and a plot that you never know where it's going.

Two minor issues though to bear in mind. Firstly this book has a glossary which is not available in audio format. So there are times where you lose the thread slightly as names and places are mentioned which you are unfamilar with.

The other minor issue is that the remaining books in this series are not available on Audible's uk site. I contacted them and they were quick to respond although with less than good news. They do not have the rights to the remaining books. Hopefully this will be resolved at some stage though.

    "Malazan series"

I have never written a review but thought this book merited one.
Yes, it's a bit difficult to keep up with with who is who at times and a couple of parts i relistened to but for me it was the first fantasy book in quite a while that had some depth.
I found some of the characterisations very good and am hoping this will build as the series continues.
As i really enjoyed it i went to download the next book to find it's not available on audio so have just bought the book instead.
The guy performing it does a good job - it must be really hard!
My general moan with men reading female dialogue is that the women often sound whiney! ah well........

"Great listen, shame it's over two parts"

Fantastic book, well worth a listen.

Great for those who like complex plotting and a wide cast of characters. High fantasy with some magic and some interesting themes, particular that of convergence - the idea that power draws other power adds some great twists.

Overall - Really recommend this author, glad there are many more in the series!

    "Excellent!!!!"

This is a fantastic Book, I am eagerly looking forward to the next volume. The world is enchanting and interesting, the characters are entertaining and inviting. You can't help but get wrapped up in the story. Even small details are clear and easy to remember. The Narration is fantastic, the voices for the different characters are clear and easy to discern. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys epic fantasy.

    "Too complicated for me"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No not really, I had to keep going back to try to remember the characters and what they were doing. It seems to jump around a lot and is difficult to get track of the story.

    "High fantasy at its best."

Brilliant story and well worth the listen.

A lot of set up as it is only the first half of a book rife with complexity.
But it's complexity is not a hindrance and draws you into the world of the Malazan empire.

    "Really couldn't get into this"

I normally spend more time with even the books that I eventually discard, but I gave up on this after about 3 hours. I just reached the point where I had (kind of) figured out what was going on in simple plot terms (massacre blah blah murdering gods blah empress blah possessed girl pretending to be a solider blah blah junior noble office in over his head blah blah, mostly) and suddenly realized that I had absolutely no interest or engagement in either the world or the characters. When you're 10% through a book and still have no clue what sort of story is being told, then it's not a story worth listening to.

There is no real attempt to set the scene or introduce you to the main structures in the world, beyond a confusing opening and numerous un-subtle hints about emperors, gods and the like in the opening chapters. That could be a soft opening to a complex mythos that grows and drags you in bit by bit, but if you plan on doing that you need something to keep the reader interested in the mean time - like interesting characters, sparkling writing and a world that is at least vibrant, even if it is mysterious. This book fails on all those counts.

There may be a good book in here once you get past the first third of so, but I just wasn't interested enough to stick around and find out.

Listened to it in a short 2 days, it has a gripping narrative with intertwining storylines to weave a dense and credible system at play behind all the characters.
