Publisher's Summary

Tom Badgerlock has been living peaceably in the manor house at Withywoods with his beloved wife, Molly, these many years, the estate a reward to his family for loyal service to the crown.

But behind the facade of respectable middle age lies a turbulent and violent past. For Tom Badgerlock is actually FitzChivalry Farseer, bastard scion of the Farseer line, convicted user of Beast-magic, and assassin. A man who has risked much for his king and lost more....

On a shelf in his den sits a triptych carved in memory stone of a man, a wolf and a fool. Once, these three were inseparable friends: Fitz, Nighteyes and the Fool. But one is long dead and one long-missing. Then one Winterfest night, a messenger arrives to seek out Fitz but mysteriously disappears, leaving nothing but a blood trail. What was the message? Who was the sender? And what has happened to the messenger? Suddenly Fitz's violent old life erupts into the peace of his new world, and nothing and no one is safe.

    "Highly recommended!"

Fantastic book, would recommended to anyone. however, even though it's book 1, felt as though you're reading the story from the middle. That being said, easy to follow and the narrators where lively, well spoken.

    "Great story. Mediocre reading"

Story was fantastic but the readers really emphasised some sentences incorrectly which detracted from the reading. Would still listen again simply for the story.

"Audio narration just wrong. Story great."

The male voice actor lLee Maxwell-Simpson was terrible, no variation in his characters no consistency. He probably should have listened to his two predecessors to understand what he was reading.
Avita Jay was fine in her portrayal of Bee. Again a fantastic story by Hobb makes you love and hate characters. Out of all the stories I find myself disliking that hideous bastard girl Shun more than any other bad guy in the books. I hope she gets a good stabbing.

    "Love this book!"

Is the first time I've heard 2 different narrators in the one audio book. But now I couldn't imagine it any other way. This story is beautiful and heart wrenching and magical.

If all Robin Hobb books are of this calibre then I've got plenty of reading to do. Very enjoyable beginning to this trilogy, one that had me grabbing my headphones for 'just one more chapter'. Recommended!

"Not as engaging as the previous books"

This felt like one long intro to the new series. The narration could have been better, the narration of fitz seemed young and lacked depth for me and the female narrators little girl voice could be grating at times.
I don't regret buying, as I think the story will hot up in the next book and Hobb is always good, but I had very high expectations that weren't quite met.

    "Fitz & The fool return"

Fitz and the Fool return to one another. But this book brings together years of Fitz living out his dream. time passes quickly through the beginning of the book like no other chapter in their lives. This almost feels like it is from another author. But eventually once the story catches up with the time line the great storytelling returns. This book is focused on Fitz and his daughter Bee and takes time to get going but like all the chapters I have moved straight on to the next installment with anticipation.

    "Disappointing"

For transparency I did not finish listening to the book. It had been heading this way from the previous series, but Hobb makes her characters dumber over time rather than thinking up a more challenging plot. therefore, while her characters can't figure out what is going on it is blindingly obvious to the reader and makes for a boring story.

"love robin hobb and love the Fitz stories!"

robin hobb is currently my favourite author and though this book is a little more sedate than her previous books it sets the scene beautifully for the rest of the trilogy, if you liked her other Fitz books then give this one a go!

    "Spoiled by narrator"

The narrator isn't bad but is unfortunately handicapped by not being the same narrator as the previous series. No matter how good they are they are not the same as the previous books so it is jarring, unfortunate as the performance is actually pretty good they are just set up to fail by being compared to previous narrators. Characters have different voices and it is hard to get used to.

The book is just as good as you would expect in all other aspects, the narrator isnt a deal breaker in this instance and its well worth buying.

"Dreadful narration. Give the sample a listen."

Worst narration I've ever heard, if a refund was available I'd have taken within the first chapter. Hobb is a great author but this has been ruined.
