Story
After seven years of bitter war, the end has come at last for the conflict known infamously as the Horus Heresy. Terra now lies within the Warmaster’s sights, the Throneworld and the seat of his father’s rule. Horus’ desire is nothing less than the death of the Emperor of Mankind and the utter subjugation of the Imperium. He has become the ascendant vessel of Chaos and amassed a terrible army with which to enact his will and vengeance. But the way to the Throne will be hard as the primarch Rogal Dorn, the Praetorian and protector of Terra, marshals the defences.

Publisher's Summary
With news of Horus' treachery spreading across the galaxy, the Great Crusade grinds to a halt as the primarchs and their Legions decide where their loyalty lies - with the Emperor or with the rebel Warmaster.
The Dark Angels, too, face a time of testing, both among the stars and on their home world, Caliban. Luther, once Lion El'Jonson's trusted second-in-command, now languishes as an exile in all but name while his master struggles to thwart the traitors' advance upon the forge world Diamat. But an ancient evil gathers its strength beneath the surface of Caliban, and the First Legion will soon be thrust into a deadly conflict where all that they know will be cast into doubt.

not bad but getting old
showing its age, the same idiosyncrasies in the lore that the early books all have. still enjoyable and definitely a must for dark angels fans

worth a read
Tale of the lion and Luther. and the match towards their respective fates.
I have found the other angels stories a bit dry, and predictable. however really enjoyed this one would recommend.

Cold Blooded
I lost count of the times a character’s blood “went cold”, or got a cold shiver down their spine.
Not bad overall, but could have been half the length.

Entertaining book with some distracting character voices at times
While most of the voice acting is excellent, some of the characters’ voices are distractingly light and youthful for fully grown astartes. Not a big issue, but a little strange at times.

The fallen are the real loyalists
Brilliantly written just as the first chapter of this dark angels saga was. So much juicy detail about caliban and a compelling mystery.

don't understand the bad reviews
this book was great it tidyed up the first angles book and continued that part of the heresy. it's a book about loyalty and honour mostly. the internal struggle of the 1st.
Luther's betrayal. the turn of Caliban. and the lion and his cold secrets. well worth the read if you liked the first angels book.
the comments about the blood running cold is not so much fear, as the legions don't feel fear it's more about that sick feeling you get when you are internally conflicted.
you have to imagine their entire world and everything they believe in was never what they thought. it would send your blood cold

A let down
I really wanted to like this Audiobook as much as I like the Dark Angels and their lore. However it is poorly written. Unlike many other novels in the HH series, this was boring and predictable. Time and again I found myself cursing in frustration over repeated poor dialogue and storyline. The narration didn't help either. Two of the main veteran space marines sounded like scared, timied little school boys always out of their depth. It could have been great... in the hands of another author and narrator. So disappointed.
