Publisher's Summary
For Oxford student Kivrin, traveling back to the 14th century is more than the culmination of her studies - it's the chance for a wonderful adventure. For Dunworthy, her mentor, it is cause for intense worry about the thousands of things that could go wrong. When an accident leaves Kivrin trapped in one of the deadliest eras in human history, the two find themselves in equally gripping - and oddly connected - struggles to survive.
Deftly juggling stories from the 14th and 21st centuries, Willis provides thrilling action - as well as an insightful examination of the things that connect human beings to each other.
Critic Reviews
- Hugo Award, Best Novel, 1993
- Nebula Award, Best Novel, 1992
"Ms. Willis displays impressive control of her material; virtually every detail introduced in the early chapters is made to pay off as the separate threads of the story are brought together." (The New York Times Book Review)
"A stunning novel that encompasses both suffering and hope....The best work yet from one of science fiction's best writers." (The Denver Post)

history made real
connie willis does a great job of immersing the reader in a historic era and making the characters real.
The only complaint is that it was too slow moving and drawn out.

Telephones in 2055?
Society has developed time travel, but is still dependent on fixed line telephones which here have endlessly narrow and apparently analogue bandwidth so characters are constantly waiting for calls or are not able to connect. There is no trace of mobile phones or personal communication devices. Connie Willis has some great ideas here, but her absolute lack of imagination regarding future technology is ridiculous and distracting. Huge chunks of time are wasted with people faffing about with mid 20th century communications technology in 2055. What's more, there seems to be no internet which is another huge failure of imagination as this book was written in the mid 90s. Further, Willis uses very lazy and annoying suspense building tropes; most tiresomely the extensive and infuriating use of characters about to give crucial information but being distracted as they're about to do so - over and over again. With extensive editing this could be a fantastic novel rather than just a tale mired in clumsy writing.
The narration was merely adequate. Jenny Sterlin's voice is not versatile and has no theatrical flair. She speaks in RP with minimal capacity to vary her accent or create distinct characterizations. Her attempt an American accent was agonizing.

Torturous
Would not recommend this title. The writing is painfully slow, repetitive and humourless. Narration was ok.

Would have been great when published
Overall enjoyed the concept and the story but unfortunately most of the barriers the characters faced in the modern plot were all dependent on landline communication in 2054. Didn’t ruin the story but was slightly frustrating and immersion breaking.

Wonderful storytelling
What a great book! The beautifully brought to life characters in the parallel timelines were so touching, I cried multiple times during the book. Thank you Connie Willis, I will need to read more of your writing now that I’ve discovered it!
