Publisher's Summary

Gaming with friends offered what Amanda missed in her dreary college life: friendship and excitement, the thrill of combat for a good cause, and the chance to be a hero. Neither Amanda nor her friend, Eric, ever expected to face the suddenly real world of their fantasy adventures. But when a careless joke draws the ire of a dark wizard, both must rise to the challenge.

Leveling up has never been so hard...or felt so good.

    "Very fun read."

First, I wanna say that Tess Irondale, who seems to have emerged solely for Kay's books, or has adopted a new moniker, has given a fantastic delivery. Easily one of my favorite narrators now. If she did adopt a moniker for these books, I wish I knew what other name she goes by to track down more titles. I hope to see more of her here.

This is a really fun story. It has much of the whole "transported into fantasy world" trope, but the characters are good and the story fun and interesting.

Others have said the story is too short, and I think that's because we like the characters at the end. They're fun and interesting, they grow and become more powerful, they make friends and lovers, and, generally, make us eager to spend more time with them.

I disagree that it's too short because it's a complete story, and it's satisfying when you're done. Kay could have pushed longer but he'd have had to introduce a handful of subplots and I think the whole thing would have gotten convoluted fast.

As it stands, you'll have a really fun 4 hours, and those in the DnD know will catch a few references.

Every DM on the planet wants to do something like this, but I think Kay nailed it here. :)

"Very entertaining but much too short"

I bought this book on special without knowing much about the author. It turned out to be a great buy. I'm looking forward to reading more from him!

"Not for kids!!! Or the sexually faint of heart!!"

I thoroughly enjoyed this book but it's important to be aware of lots of explicit sex (lesbian and heterosexual), violence and other non-YA type stuff. Otherwise, for adults, a comic book read but lots of fun.

    Story
"A little smut in nod to Robert E. Howard"

lot of nice subtle reference to Conan or Howard's work. sex was a little ill timed, and few eye rolling moments, but overall, I could have felt happy with more from this world and trio of hero's. Author should definitely revisit the genre.

Also ties into the Good Intentions series by the same author.

    tongue and cheek. good fun.

Elliott Kay delivers again! Ms. Irondale is very consistent and very skilled at bringing the characters to voice.

    "Cute"

I enjoyed this read. It's not the best or worst of this genre. It's a bit fantastical but then again that is the story line. I chuckled a few times.

    "Too short"

I was disappointed by this story because it could have been much longer and drawn out. I would be interested if there were a longer version, or longer sequels, but as it stands right now it feels way too short.

    "Light, fast paced fun"

This was my introduction to Elliott Kay's writing. His other two series looked like fun, but I wasn't sure how good they would be. Then I noticed this novella, and I figured that it would make a good starting point.

I've read/listened to very few good 'player is sucked into a game world' stories, and equally few new additions to old school sword and sorcery stories. This one takes a swing at doing both at once, and knocks it out of the park.

This was also the first time listening to something read by Tess Irondale. She's impressed me, and has the perfect voice for Mr. Kay's work.

    "Short, but fun story"

Fun, almost bite-sized story read by an amazing voice actress. Elliott Kay has a very interesting style that balances high prose with grit and irreverence. ﹰThere is a heaping dose of fantasy in this story, but it's set in world that has a bit of weight to it. ﹰTess ﹰIrondale does a marvelous job of breathing life to the story. I should caution that ﹰMr. ﹰKay likes to include richly detailed sex scenes in his stories, and ﹰMs. ﹰIrondale is superb at acting out those parts of the story.
