Publisher's Summary

The new novel by the author of the best-selling The World Walker series.

'My name is Daniel Harbin, and I'm a child of The Deterrent.'

What if a superhuman turned out not to be so super...or even human? Britain's superhero, The Deterrent, was unveiled to the world in 1979 and disappeared two years later. The truth about his origins has never been revealed. The rumours about his children - those that survived - and their mysterious abilities have never been confirmed. Until now.

Armed with a diary that reveals everything about The Deterrent's early years, Daniel Harbin - discovering powers of his own - finds himself dragged into the same secretive government department his famous father worked for. Can a halfhero be a better superhero than his father, or is Daniel making a terrible mistake? When the wrong people know what you're capable of, no matter how powerful you are, you're still in danger....

Critic Reviews

"I've read it now, Children of the Deterrent that is and um...it's good. It's really good. Oh my days it's good.... From the opening page, I was seriously gripped. In fact, for the first time in years, I put my own work aside and pushed my deadlines back a bit to make time to read it. I even did that reader thing of going to bed early, just so I could get stuck back into it." (R R Haywood)

Really enjoyed

While it took me a few chapters to get into the book, and understand the rhythm of how it was written - once I did I couldn't stop listening:)
I liked the character (Chris, I think) who was reading us her diary of the events. She was a down to earth, funny character.
Definitely would recommend this book!

Looking foward book 2

I became a fan of Sainsbury after reading the World Walker series. I enjoy his style of writing and am looking foward to book 2 in Children of the Deterrent. The narrators were excellent.

Good start of the series

The events are oddly arranged and that's the beauty of the book. The style is great and the narration is superb. Overall the author has written a great story, which develops a bit slow (sometimes you will hear information which is completely useless, like what kind of food is on the table), but the way the author describes stuff is very intoxicating. My only recommendation would be to speed up the story with about x1.5.

I'll definitely listen to the next books in the series. I've become keen on Sainsbury's style. It is truly different from most authors.

One comment on the narrators - while British narrators bring great feeling when listening, they also bring a bit odd pronunciation of some words and I was not able to catch some words now and there.

Overall - recommended!

Twist on usual superhero story

This was a chance buy and listen, having not come across the author before. or seeing any reviews or publicity around the book. However it sounded like an interesting premise, so I went for it and very happily it paid off.

It is very different to usual superhero stories, with this feeling like quite a raw and harsh side of being "different". I found the concept of how the main "superhero" came into being, an unusual and interesting approach, being made and then brought up in isolation, remaining very young in his mind as a result.

The others that appear. again, are very different, both in how they come about but also in how they are treated by others. One of which we get to know from early on and it's because of his story that this book grabbed me immediately, as we get very close to him from the outset.

The pace of the story is good, although I did lose the thread of what was happening a couple of times. It feels like this is the first of a series and whilst I mostly enjoyed this one, I'm not sure I would go on to listen to any more. For me it, was an interesting concept that's now been explored.

It's hard to say any more than this, quite vague description, without ruining it for others! so I'll end by commenting on the narration, which was great!

An Unforgettable Read

Bloody amazing. I enjoyed the narration of Cressida as she sounded more natural, as if she was telling the story rather than reading a book. Having said that, the content was brilliant, the storyline, although was pure fantasy, I could imagine it really happening, and the writing was as I expect from such a talented Author. It would make a brilliant film!

Not your average superhero story

This was the first book I’ve encountered by this author, it’s very well written and the narration is spot on.
The story moves along at a good pace and keeps the listener hooked throughout.
I’d recommend the book

The new golden age of Brit SciFi is here!!

Wow! Just wow!
Between Sainsbury’s Halfheroes and Haywood’s Extracted series, we have not only a new genre of almost ‘written for audio’ but the quality and unashamed relevance to modern and uniquely British way of life in these series makes for incredible listens.

I just love this new series- so much action, character, humour, relatable events... harking back to classic themes but undeniably original - I cannot wait to see where it goes!!

Can’t wait for book 2 to hit my ears ;-) - heck I may even resort to reading it to get there sooner... we’ll done Ian.

Narration - excellent.
Sam is a bit subdued throughout but this meets the character’s backstory and sad situation. He did give life to surrounding characters that showed this was a role not a reading style.

Jaimi- just excellent!!! (Googled her and recognised immediately from excellent performance in Black Mirror); she gave real depth to her character’s naivety and unshakeable goodness of heart. Her ancillary male characters were narrated very well to.

Over all, Loved it!(can you tell?)

A good read.

A good read, engaging story line which reaches a satisfying conclusion, not too open ended but leaving room for development.

Brilliant and gripping

What a great book. I was hooked right from the start and thoroughly enjoyed it. Sad it’s over 😢. So great to read a super hero story that is so very different!
