Editorial reviews

One of the most read fantasy series in the world, A Song of Ice and Fire, is here in Book 2, A Clash of Kings, written by legendary author George R. R. Martin and in an unabridged audiobook narrated by veteran British actor Roy Dotrice. This phenomenal series has been the inspiration behind the colossal HBO TV series Game of Thrones. The Seven Kingdoms lie in ruin. King Robert is dead and the boy-king rules as a tyrant. Talk of an immense war is seeping throughout the lands. Available now from Audible.

Publisher's Summary

The complete, unabridged audiobook of A Clash of Kings.

HBO’s hit series A Game of Thrones is based on George R. R. Martin’s internationally best-selling series A Song of Ice and Fire, the greatest fantasy epic of the modern age. A Clash of Kings is the second volume in the series.

Throughout Westeros, the cold winds are rising.

From the ancient citadel of Dragonstone to the forbidding lands of Winterfell, chaos reigns as pretenders to the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms stake their claims through tempest, turmoil and war.

As a prophecy of doom cuts across the sky - a comet the colour of blood and flame - five factions struggle for control of a divided land. Brother plots against brother and the dead rise to walk in the night.

Against a backdrop of incest, fratricide, alchemy and murder, the price of glory is measured in blood.

Great book

The book is great and the narrative is good but some of the pronunciation choices are quite weird. In what world does "Brienne" pronounced as "Bra-y-in"? I cringed every single time she was mentioned. There are some inconsistent accent choices as well. Some very high-born characters have peasant accents. Accents aside, the emotion and the the flow of the narrative is quite good.

Narrator x 2 please

This book would be better with more than one narrator as there are so many characters. It got a bit confusing at times.

Great story, awful narrator

The story is really great, though I do find George R. R. Martin hard to read at times, he gets bogged down in detail and there are so many charscters that it can be 30+ chapters before you get back around to the character that you're actually interested in at the moment.

The narator on the other hand is aweful. The accents the narrator uses become increasingly absurd as the books go on and more characters are introduced. the accents become so thick that it is nearly impossible to understand what is being said at times. The majority of the accents he uses sound drunk, slurred or out right retarded.

Difficult listen

Fantastic story, one of the greats. However, the performance is very hard to stomach. There seems to be only 5 voices used for all characters. It also seems as though accents are selected at random, why would one of Lannister siblings be Welsh and another not? A sweetly feeble voice is often used for big powerful characters and often there is no alteration between the general narration voice and female characters. I appreciate it may be difficult to perform a reading like this and fair play to Roy, I’m sure he’s done his best but I must say I am very disappointed. I’ve slogged through this one but will return to the physical books. I had hoped this would be another classic series I could have saved for revisiting but me thinks not me lord.

Good story, mixed character voicing

Good story. Not 100% convinced by the narrator. The character voices are all too "unique", almost life there are no "normal" people in this universe. Everyone sounds old or has some kind of speech impediment, etc. but maybe this is necessary since there are so many characters. The narrator's real voice itself is quite pleasant and fits the atmosphere well

Sack Dotrice

I was harsh in my allocation of one star for performance. Admittedly Dotrice has some talent with voices and story telling, but I'm offended that more care wasn't taken to correct mistakes that he made. Mistakes shouldn't be left in the final cut. Also mispronounciation of character names like Brienne really grates on me after a while.

This is not a story!!

this book is just as dull as the first. Its not a story its more an overly detailed history text. if you are a fan of the t.v "show" you may enjoy this. if not dont waste your time. The narrator does nothing to improve the experience with his boring tone and lack of range.

Great story. Terrible narrator.

Why do actors not research their pronunciation of names properly?
Roy Dotrice murders most characters with the woeful accents and who the heck is "Bry-een"??? Sets my teeth on edge every time he says it.
Bree-en, Roy. Bree-en.
