Fast alle der dreihundert Männer verhungern, ertrinken oder werden von Indianern getötet. Vier überleben und verbringen acht Jahre bei verschiedenen Indianerstämmen, bis es ihnen 1536 gelingt, Mexiko zu erreichen. Cabeza de Vaca ist einer von ihnen und schreibt nach seiner Rückkehr nach Spanien diesen Bericht, der 1542 erstmals veröffentlicht wurde.
