About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Scattered Minds explodes the myth of attention deficit disorder as genetically based - and offers real hope and advice for children and adults who live with the condition.

Gabor Maté is a revered physician who specializes in neurology, psychiatry and psychology - and himself has ADD. With wisdom gained through years of medical practice and research, Scattered Minds is a must-listen for parents - and for anyone interested how experiences in infancy shape the biology and psychology of the human brain.

Scattered Minds:

- Demonstrates that ADD is not an inherited illness, but a reversible impairment and developmental delay

- Explains that in ADD, circuits in the brain whose job is emotional self-regulation and attention control fail to develop in infancy - and why

- Shows how 'distractibility' is the psychological product of life experience

- Allows parents to understand what makes their ADD children tick, and adults with ADD to gain insights into their emotions and behaviours

- Expresses optimism about neurological development even in adulthood

- Presents a programme of how to promote this development in both children and adults

Brilliant and compassionate thinking drawing from different areas of knowledge (e.g. attachment, self-determination) skillfully woven together. I love the attention to the foundation of ADD not just symptoms or treatment. I related to so much of this myself even though I don't have ADD, so it makes me wonder how much of this is meaningful for everyone. Perhaps if I read some other books by Gabor Mate I will see some of these same ideas reflected from different angles.

I have ADD children. I have to look at myself and this book has helped me see my ADD. I am a successful man with low tolerance for incompetance. Over the last number of years I am learning to be open, caring and understanding. I have a long journey and thanks to books like this I can grasp a deeper understanding.

Love how Dr Gabor is a true reductionist, curing the disease that determines the systems rather than treating the symptoms to determine the behaviour. Such an eloquent way of reminding us of our own ability to heal our pain that ma infests as illness, through embracing love of one's self so we can love others.

Cuts to core!
