I wish I had known about this book 25 years ago...

life changing for me and those close to me. Should be recommended reading for anyone with ADD and anyone that has a relationship with someone with ADD.
Psychiatrists could jump start, if not actually create ongoing benefit with their patients if they read this.
How have I not had this recommended by a single one of them..... ? I guess that proves that we can't rely on them alone for guidance.

Wise beyond words

This book is life changing for anyone with ADHD. It is uniquely compelling whilst not being new-age. Parental attunement and the lack thereof contribute significantly to ADHD and this causal factor is also the path to healing both brain and heart.

ADHD by an ADHDer & doctor

A unique and much needed book about ADD/ADHD from the lived experience of ADHD in combination with the professional knowledge of a medical practitioner. Dr Maté identifies the holes in the medical paradigm and approach towards ADHD and offers insightful information and guidance. Essential listening for parents of ADHD kids and ADHD adults themselves.

Such a thought provoking book!

As a mother of 3 children diagnosed with ADD (one moderately affected and two mildly) when at primary school, initially I felt guilty as I listened to this book. Today all 3 are mature adults whom I love, like and am proud of; but I wish I had been exposed to this book in the 1980s, so I may have better understood the influence of separation and anxiety. Wish I had known better how to manage and 'take charge' of situations. My eldest and youngest resented number 2 child, who was such a challenge to rear. My greatest fear was his impulsiveness. Fortunately a conversation with my husband reminded me of my patient approach, so I felt reassured I had remained the responsible adult at least some of the time. 🤗Gabor Mate's belief in the resilience of children if they know they are truly loved reassured me. After finishing the book, I realised that if we can say we, as parents, have done our best, that is a good thing. What I also understand is that armed with a better understanding of ADD, I can perhaps be helpful with my grandchildren. While I don't live close to them, with Gabor's insights, perhaps I can give helpful advice - especially re the approach to time management and exhaustion of both mother and child. I plan to read the book again, since it's given me so much to think about and I suspect I will pick up more subtle messages.

This is absolutely essential reading to anyone affected by attention deficit disorders. Dr Maté’s approach is well written, thoroughly based on research and shared with so much empathy. Every page is relatable and his advice is practical, gentle yet profoundly effective.

Life changing!!!!

Didn't know that my mother's rageuos beatings caused me this much damage. But why would i suspect that?, such beatings are the gold standard of parenting in Africa. Its sad i discovered this now, imagine if i dicovered this in my earlier years, instead of in my final year of university, at the same time i feel lucky to have discovered this at 21. I have seen first hand how bad adhd can be if it goes untreated. My father was a great lawyer at his peak, he is an absolute mess right now because of this. Lost job, marriage, back with his mother, multiple kids, crippling debts, lost car to pawnshop after years of paying for it. I will try to recommend this book for him and i hope my future wont be the same. Time to start the process of healing.

Excellent book. Really gets you to understand how ADD originates, works and feels

This book has helped me understand how ADD affects my life, my husband’s and my 11 year old daughter. I feel now that I can be much more effective when dealing with everyday issues in relation with my family and with myself. Also to be able to be self compassionate and be compassionate with them rather than judgemental.

Excellent book

Excellent, well-written book that covers a lot of ground, including a role of attachment and presents ADD a lot as an attachment disorder, which I find helpful, but others may argue for distinguishing them, which, in fact is often hard to do and this book does a good job at integrating rather then distinguishing the two disorders. On the whole this is a well-balanced book when it comes to bio-psycho-social-spiritual formulation. I truly enjoyed Daniel Mate’s voice and narration, one of the best l have heard on Audible books. Unfortunately, some of the Audible books are narrated by jarring, unpleasant voices that my ADD brain absolutely cannot stand even when I'm genuinely interested in the book itself. Daniel’s voice did a true service to this beautifully written book.

everybody should read this book!

I work with the public, not in the way most folk do so I thought by listening to this book I'd realise a better understanding of the individuals I meet. Now that I'm done I have a better understanding of myself and my own failings. Really is a book everyone should make time for!

The knowledge you gain from this book is invaluable.

Such a relief to know that the cause of ADD can be addressed. I only wish the methods needed to facilitate the brain rewiring itself were more clear and concise and less woven into the overall narrative. If you decide to listen to this book, have a pen and paper handy to make notes when the processes are mentioned. Ultimately, you will need a family based therapist to help you rewire if you or your child has ADD, and he explains why.

Confirmed my Self Diagnosis after listening

Brought the audiobook so I could listen whilst I walked. Could relate to the author as he has ADD as well and had his own personal anecdotes and perspectives Virtually all of the symptoms I could relate to.Some to a lesser degree as over decades I've used different techniques to lessen its impact on me.

Previously I was chunking together pieces of the puzzle blindfolded. Now I've finally have been shown the picture of the jigsaw box.

Fantastic book

I can't recommend this book highly enough, as with all Dr. Mate's books he has mixed science with extremely readable material.

I have in quick succession read all of Dr. Mate's books, each one of them has been really illuminating and given me a great deal of food for thought.

The narration by Daniel Mate is flawless and just adds to the satisfying experience of listening to the book.

Too anecdotal

The author’s claim that ADD may be caused by a disturbance of attachment in infancy and early emotional trauma is interesting insofar as it presents an alternative to the often one-sidedly neuropsychiatric view found in many other books on this topic. However, he is unable to adduce any substantial support for his claims. Instead, he resorts to vast generalizations on the basis of anecdotal evidence and personal experiences. Nonetheless, it does seem to me that his book contains a number of insights.

Very well written, insightful but not much practical advice

I enjoyed listening to this book. It provides a very insightful view of ADHD and a balanced view on medication. In terms of other practical advice on what to do to deal with ADHD, the book provides a lot of advice on what not to do, things that are harmful to people with ADHD but it does not provide practical solutions that could be used instead that would help alleviate the barriers caused by ADHD.

I found this book to be very moving and very helpful at the same time, as someone exploring a diagnosis of ADHD as an adult. I found scientific background and social understanding. Recording itself is very well done, very easy to listen to.
