Leaving behind her forensic pathology practice in South Carolina, Kay Scarpetta takes up an assignment in New York City, where the NYPD has asked her to examine an injured patient in a psychiatric ward. The handcuffed and chained patient, Oscar Bane, has specifically asked for her, and he begins to talk. He says his injuries were sustained in the course of a murder... that he did not commit.

Is Bane a criminally insane stalker who has fixed on Scarpetta? Or is his paranoid tale true, and it is he who is being spied on, followed and stalked by the actual killer? The only thing Scarpetta knows for certain is that a woman has been tortured and murdered - and that more violent deaths will follow....

loose ends, pet shop owners and old woman accross the street from murder Victim just dropped out.

I iked that there were a few suspects, it gets your brain going. Very easy to "see" characters. Terrific narrating once again.

Great storyline and characters

As always a great story line. narrator is engaging and clear. I Love this series.

This story feels like a “comeback” novel and there’s a lot to come back from! The last two novels scattered Scarpetta et al to the four winds, at the least psychologically; Merino’s attack on Scarpetta, Scarpetta and Benton trying to re-establish their trust in each other and Lucy letting go of her rage.

It was great to see ADA Berger back in the picture - a great character to insert into the “Scarpetta family”.

This story does a great job of picking up the emotional pieces, all the while trying to solve a twisted case.

Still loving Cornwell and her taut, twisted well thought out crimes and characters.

Highly recommended.

A “comeback” novel (?)

Despite listening to this twice over I still feel it was difficult to follow - the third person narration often gets confusing.
While I enjoy the characters, I'd like to see some more robust action.
As always the performance narration by Lorelei King was impeccable.
