Publisher's Summary

The Ghosts of the Tanith First-and-Only have been away from the front line for too long. Listless and hungry for action, they are offered a mission that perfectly suits their talents.

The objective: the mysterious Salvation's Reach, a remote and impenetrable stronghold concealing secrets that could change the course of the Sabbat Worlds campaign. But the proposed raid is so hazardous, it's regarded as a suicide mission, and the Ghosts may have been in reserve for so long they've lost their edge. Haunted by spectres from the past and stalked by the Archenemy, Colonel-Commissar Gaunt and his Ghosts embark upon what could be their finest hour...or their final mission.

A poor substitute

This book is a difficult one to get through, purely for the change of reader. All the familiar voices and characters you are used to have been tossed out the window, I don't expect one narrator to completely copy the style of another, but it shocked me that someone with a natural Irish accent somehow managed to voice Irish/Celtic coded people in a less impressive way. Ayatani Zweil is also an insane Indian man now?

considering some core characters die in this book, its quite disheartening this is the last time we hear their voice and its not even by Toby Longsworth.
The story was quite good, Dan Abnett always nails it, but this reader ain't it.

Good story ruined by poor voice acting

Im slugging through this book as a write this review. The readers performance is horrible. I'm concerned that the next few books are no longer Toby. GW needs to have these books reread by Toby.

Great story but terrible narrator

The Gaunts Ghosts series is probably my favourite series of all time. Such a rich and deep tale, woven by a master with a true grip on the 40k universe. my only gripe with this audio book is the choice of narrators. He uses inappropriate, nonsensical voices that absolutely shame my beloved characters. His characterisation of Space Marines is the absolute worst I have ever heard. I struggled through but the ridiculous voices totally detracted from the amazing story and made it a choir to get through.....

Where’s Toby?

Missed Toby Longworth big time, I’m sure this narrator is fine but he obviously didn’t bother listening to any of the other books.

Different but good

Different from the voice I’m used to but James did a great job for in building atmosphere.

Thank goodness the writing is good.

I am a die hard fan of the series and I think that this is the first book where the voice actor nearly made me skip this book altogether. It’s out of respect for the series, and authors skill, that I stuck with it.

Good flow from the previous book but jeeze… please don’t get this guy back to read it. While I acknowledge individual flare and style for voice acting but this was ridiculous. Larks sounds like a 6 year old girl on a sugar rush as to a lot of the other ghosts. I wish this story, which was great, was redone so the narrative can be done justice. BRING BACK TOBY!

Worst Voice performance of any audiobook

Gaunts Ghosts is a fantastic series. Toby Longworths narration is usually second to none. However this new narrator is absolutely without a doubt the worst I've ever heard. It's like I'm listening to a conversation inside a schizophrenics head not a story told from different characters perspective. Bring back Toby!

narrator grew on me but definitely distracting

some choices in voices definitely made it hard to catch at times and I struggled to complete though it had grown on me by the end

Questionable narration choices.

Such a jarring experience having a new narrator for such an important and interesting story. Not a great choice of voices for some loved characters and probably the worst voices of space marines I've heard, made it quite hard to listen to but still worth while if you can power through.
