Publisher's Summary

The new SAS epic from best-selling military historian Damien Lewis.

We share the triumphs and tragedies of a group of elite soldier trailblazers as they commit daring raids behind enemy lines in 1944, manage an against-the-odds escape to victory and then seek post-war retribution for the terrible murder of their captured comrades.

SAS Band of Brothers is replete with action, peppered with great characters and features two of the most daring escapes of WWII. It ends with the hunted becoming the hunters - a group of men intent on seeking out the Nazis responsible for their brethren's deaths, on an ultra-deniable SAS mission to avenge a war crime.

This is the new best seller from Damien Lewis. It bears all his hallmarks - an epic, unstoppable special-forces narrative based on hitherto unavailable personal testimony and private family archives.

Good till final third

A really compelling story explained as always by the author very well. The performance could lose the accents. However I got all the way through to the final third and it became very familiar. I even questioned if I had listened to this before??

However the last couple of chapters as the basic outlines of the author’s other “Hunting Nazi” book.

A good listen but if you have a lot of the authors books slightly repeating himself.

Fake Dialogue?

Whilst this is a fascinating story it is poorly read with the narrator providing quite laughable accents for some of the dialogue. And as to that dialogue I can only assume that it has been fabricated to add quite unnecessary drama to an already dramatic tale. Nobody has the inclination nor means to write down what they said or heard spoken on a night time raid behind enemy lines but here is the author providing specific lines of dialogue supposedly uttered in the middle of an attack. I don't think so. This worries me as you begin to wonder what else has been made up to beef up the story. If you like spiffing stories of derring-do without much regard for accuracy then this is the book for you, but don't buy the audiobook unless you like listening to a narrator trying hard but failing miserably to imitate any accent other than received English.

Brilliantly researched and written.

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. Damien has done a fantastic piece of work and it’s essential that this history and its people are never forgotten. The epilogue was very informative and it shows that governments do keep information undercover, some essential obviously but using war criminals who should have been tried and punished for their crimes, I question the integrity of that.
