About this listen

From conducting top-secret missions to making Australian submarine history, Commodore Peter Scott depicts what it takes to be a Submariner.

Over a decorated 34-year career, Commodore Scott served in 10 submarines, passed the most demanding military command course in the world and served as the Head of Profession of the Submarine Arm of the Royal Australian Navy.

During that time his character was forged by the challenges of naval service, success and failure as a leader, catastrophic onboard disasters while dived, and life-threatening traumas. Along the way, he also endured personal battles with self-doubt, addiction, depression and anxiety.

In this honest and enlightening tale, he shares his quest for self acceptance, and for the courage, commitment and compassion to lead the warriors of Australia's Silent Service.

‘Peace and war for a submariner are much the same. Service with our Navy's main strike weapon is a mystery for most Australians. If we are to comprehend the terms of our survival, we must know. This beautifully written memoir is our key. It needs a wider audience.' The Honourable Kim Beazley AC

‘… an absorbing, often searing account of the life of a submariner and a Navy leader. Peter's story chronicles the modern life of our critical strategic deterrent–the RAN's submarine arm.' General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK AC (Mil) CVO MC (Retd)

‘Personal and full of integrity, a great account of the ups and downs of serving Australia as an outstanding submariner.' Air Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston AK, AFC (Retd)

Peter’s brilliant career story shines a light on the largely dark and secret world of the Submarine arm. A privilege to be allowed into his life, his adventures and into the submarine control room. The narration was first class, capturing the emotion, and circumstance of every situation, whilst making it extremely relatable for the lay person. In my top 5 of most enjoyable books ever.

Your MUST read for this year.

I spent 25 years as a Royal Australian Navy Survey Recorder, and therefore my interaction with submarines and submariners was limited to occasionally seeing one alongside, very rarely seeing one on the surface at sea and on one memorable occasion in 1974, getting hammered with a very hospitable crew onboard an RN O Boat in Cairns which berthed astern of HMAS Flinders. That is the prelude to this recommendation of what I found to be a fascinating and informative audio book I just finished listening to. Running Deep is just a top dit. This audio book was a rivetting listen, Such an honest story of this Officers experiences, I put it down thinking I would have loved to have sailed with him. Written with a true understanding of sailors jargon and an easy familiartity, every chapter was packed with fact, personal experiences (good and bad) and offered unique insight into life onboard the Oberons and Collins classes with refreshing honesty about what we all knew was wrong within. Highly recommended to any Navy personnel, I am doubly sure the submariners would identify with all he writes about.

A brilliant insight into life on RAN submarines
