קובץ הסיפורים 'רץ' הוא ספרו הראשון למבוגרים של דויד גרוסמן, יליד ירושלים (1954), לאחר 'דו-קרב', ספרו לילדים. גרוסמן החל לפרסם את סיפוריו בכתב-העת 'סימן קריאה'. עוד לפני פרסומו של הספר כבר צוין גרוסמן על-ידי רבים (דן מירון, אורי ברנשטיין, מנחם פרי ואחרים) כסופר הראוי לתשומת-לב רבה ביותר. מיד עם פרסומו הפך הספר לרב-מכר, ודויד גרוסמן, שהיה עד אותה עת אנונימי, נעשה באחת סופר מוכר ומוערך. הסיפורים מפתיעים בגיוון של חומרי המציאות שבהם, בכוחם של המצבים האנושיים ושל הפרוזה הקצבית שבה הם כתובים, ובעושר של היבטים פסיכולוגיים. דמויותיו של גרוסמן, המוטרדות מבפנים, מופקעות מעצמן ועומדות מול עצמן בעת ובעונה אחת. בבריחתן ובניסיונן להבין ולהרגיש הן נאחזות תדיר באיזושהי "אובססיה" חיצונית, המשמשת צומת מטאפורית עשירה למצבן הפנימי. המציאות הנזילה שלהן היא חיצונית ופנימית כאחת, ממש כפי שהטקסט הוא, לעתים, ספק מונולוג פנימי וספק מסירה "מבחוץ". בספר חמישה סיפורים: רץ חמורים יאני על ההר ימים זוגיים מיכאל צידון, מייקל "חמורים" הוא הסיפור הראשון שכתב גרוסמן, והוא זכה ב-1980 בפרס הראשון מטעם האוניברסיטה העברית. סיפורו השני, "יאני על ההר", זכה בפרס ע"ש ניומן. הסיפור "רץ" ראה אור בנוסח חדש בשנת 2000 במסגרת'האנתולוגיה החדשה'.
