Publisher's Summary

Journey with Olympian Ryan Hall as he reflects on the joys and trials of the running life and, along the way, shows you how his faith has helped him win in his workouts, races, and overall mindset.

Ryan Hall is an Olympic athlete and American record holder in the half marathon (59:43). But as a kid, Ryan hated running. He wanted nothing to do with the sport until one day, he felt compelled to run the 15 miles around his neighborhood lake. He was hooked.

Starting that day, Ryan felt a God-given purpose in running. He knew he could, and would, race with the best runners in the world and that his talent was a gift to serve others. These two truths launched Ryan's 20-year athletic career and guided him through epic failures and exceptional breakthroughs to competing at the highest level.

Now a coach, speaker, and nonprofit partner, Ryan shares the powerful faith behind his athletic achievements and the lessons he learned that helped him push past limits, make space for relationships that enrich life on and off the running trails, and cultivate a positive mindset.

Lessons such as:

  • Learning how to focus on your purpose and say no to distractions
  • Select and strive for the right goals - goals for the heart and the body
  • How to deal with defeat and disappointment
  • How to endure immense pain and build resilience
  • Running as if you've already won

Ryan's story is one of encouragement and inspiration for listeners of any age and level of running ability - or none at all. It's a story that shows that you, too, can change your outlook, see God's hand in your life, and run the race that really matters.

Way better than expected.

To be honest, I only bought this book because Ryan Hall wrote it. It was truly a great book. Mostly it is for the Christian Runner, but still a book anyone could love.
My two negatives on the book is that it is very short, and it should have a pdf concurrent reading with it. He has so many passages he references that there is no way to remember all of them. I listen while I run, so no way to write them down for later.

Insightful yet Confusing

As a fan of Ryan Hall, this was a must-read. He has great insights from his faith and running background that were encouraging and helpful, personally and as a runner, myself. However, the book is organized by theme, not chronology, which made certain points in the book frustrating. Often, a story would be told, leading to a climax, but, instead, the story would jump to a related theme, 8 years in the past, but did not really complete the story being told. However, despite those unwelcome interruptions, I enjoyed the book and encourage anyone who is a runner or wants to go to the next level in their life to read it.

not about running

i thought this book would be about running with a little bit of Jesus thrown in. this is a Bible study with a few lines about running.

So good!

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did. God spoke to me thru in so many ways. Thank you, Mr. Hall, for sharing your testimony. It is helping others like me to overcome in life. Also, thank you Mr. Barnes for narrating the audiobook. Your voice made me feel like a friend was talking to me instead of someone just reading to me. Good stuff!

Mixed feelings...

The only thing I liked about this book was the running-themed Christian devotional format of the book. The narration was boring and monotone. For a professional runner, the author's running career was underwhelming, in my opinion. I only participate casually in ultramarathons, but I personally know and have seen people at the races I've done run extraordinary races. Seeing my ultra friends, and reading about professional ultramarathon athletes, overcome extreme obstacles during long, technical races is so inspiring and exciting to hear about--much more so than boring shorter, and not even necessarily faster, marathons. Hearing about the author coming in 3rd and 4th place many times during famous but tame and neat marathons was disappointing. While the author uses his experiences as examples of how he learned humility, patience and submission to God's unknown will, it didn't make for a good story that I spent so much time listening to, and definitely not worth the money I paid for this audio book. So, if you're looking to read about a Christian with a good attitude about running and life, this book is for you. But if you're looking for a book about an outstanding professional runner, this ain't it.

Excellent Book!

This is a solid book!

If you are looking for technical running advice, this book will help your mental game. It will not coach you on exercise physiology....

If you are looking for advice on how to push through hard times in your life (such as running a long distance race or likely many of life's other challenges) then this book will be inspiring.

If you are looking to gain some insight behind the scenes of one of the world's best runners then this book is it.

If you are a person of faith, and a runner, you will enjoy this book. Ryan repeatedly shares his personal experiences about his relationship with God during his running career.

As you might image, I enjoyed all of the above aspects of the book. Ryan, thank you for sharing your story!

excellent, very spiritually motivating!

This book combined my to favorite subjects, God and running! Ryan's dedication to God is the highlight of his career. He was able to focus on enjoying the experiences instead of focusing on winning or times. very inspirational.

Would rather have heard read by author

This review is more about the reading than the story. Not sure why after writing his story Ryan or the publisher would not have taken the effort to have him record it. If I had to hear especially mispronounced one more time I might have thrown my phone across the room. I think I would have enjoyed this more in book form.

Thought this book was about running!

Tried this book twice but gave up. I heard about Ryan via other books with Deena Castor and Meb but realise the focus of his story is more about his beliefs rather than his career. that's fine but I was hoping to get an insight into his running career rather than listen to tangents.

Too many religious references.

Ryan hall is a phenomenal athlete. I looked forward to listening to this book but was disappointed with the repeated religious referencing from the beginning. This wasn’t in any way represented in the title. I couldn’t deal with repeated religious references any more so I stopped listening early on. This is a religious book disguised as a running book.

More like Bible study than running

I've nothing against people who have faith and knew Ryan was a committed Christian from previous interviews, but this book quickly went from tiresome to ridiculous. He supports a lot of statements / decisions with a bible quote, and I mean a lot. Fine, I was just about coping with that but then the section where he decided that God was going to be his running coach was ridiculous. Apparently, God quickly told him to seek the advise of actual coaches, rather than the Almighty lacing up his Nikes and running tempo with Ryan.Maybe God was at work here, delivering the message 'are you stupid, get an actual coach'. God also told him that rest was important, obviously there was a bible quote to support this too. Strangely every single coaching manual you can find tells you the same thing, maybe the good Lord has been busy writing manuals. I find it interesting how people get strength from their faith, but unfortunately to me, Ryan came across as a bit of a religious nut job. I'll be returning this for a refund.
