About this listen

Samuel has one goal in life: fix his broken core.

What does he not want? A bossy, overprotective, possessive, teasing dragon sticking his nose in business that is not his.

Even if he is sexy and supports Samuel on his quest to find the lost Sousa Mage Clan.

Utterly beside the point. He does not need a dragon boyfriend.

(Un)fortunately, Dimitri disagrees.

This is my third go through this book about the ice dragons. The first time I read it and the other twice I’ve listened to it on Audible. I absolutely love the whole series and the previous one about the fire dragons too. It has a compelling storyline. Adorable characters, humour, romance and adventure. In other words, it is perfect escapism. On top of that the narration is top notch. I have no doubt this won’t be my last encounter with it either,

Frustrated and ashamed, Samuel comes from a long line of mages, but unlike his twin, he’s never been able to access his magical core and he feels the disappointment of his family. Having thrown himself into archeology, he’s determined to unearth the lost Sousa Mage Clan in the jungles of Brazil, which may hold the secret to healing his core. Dumped by his boyfriend, Samuel’s luck finally changes when he meets Dimitri, a Russian ice dragon, whose clan offers to assist him on his search. While Dimitri knows instantly that Samuel is his fated mate, Samuel is far keener on healing his damaged core.

I liked the world-build, the creative fantasy ideas, and the strong history that underpins this series. There’s some nice humour, Dimitri was a charismatic character, and the partial slow reveal about the lost clan was interesting (there’s obviously more to come in the rest of the series). I was less enamoured with Samuel’s prickly, anxious personality and his unwillingness to believe the dragons around him—he’s lived with a lifetime of disappointment and low self-esteem, I guess. This didn’t wow me ,it was too light and fluffy, I think I was waiting for something epic to happen that never did. 🎧 Voice actor Joel Leslie turned his deft hand to a range of accents, which were all satisfying.

Light and fluffy, needed more oomph!

Great story idea in a well formed magical world. Charming characters were brought to life well by the reader. Just a bit of an annoyance that the writer tends to repeat and labour their character and species traits, as a reader, yes I got it the first time, but by the 20th time I was over it. It's a good story that could do with some really serious editing, but still woth the read/listen.
