About this listen

From two USA Today best-selling authors comes a steamy MM enemy to lovers romance.

Ruger James Fulton is used to being confused. After barely graduating from high school, RJ took his one marketable skill and opened up an auto shop in town. Cars have always made sense to him, while the rest of the world makes him feel like an idiot.

The one thing he never had to think twice about was his sexuality until one night during a chance encounter with a biker from a rival MC. All it takes is a few minutes to turn RJ’s world upside down, leaving him to question everything he thought he knew about himself.

Thane Montgomery has spent the majority of his life alone, fending for himself. After finally finding a family with the Devil Hounds MC, he won’t do anything to screw it up, even if that means staying in the closet. He does whatever he’s told, like a good soldier should, in exchange for the club’s acceptance.

When Thane gets shot protecting the president’s daughter, he ends up in the last place he expected – in the home of one of the club’s enemies. Some of which are still holding one hell of a grudge against him.

RJ is furious when he finds out that the man who kidnapped his prospect is going to be a guest in his house. But mostly, he’s nervous about what may happen in such a close proximity to the only man he’s ever wanted.

I thoroughly enjoyed a different series by Lane Hart, and was looking forward to listening to this book. To say I was underwhelmed would be an understatement… I rarely leave poor reviews, but this was one of the most unenjoyable books I’ve ever purchased.

My disappointment comes from multiple fronts. Firstly, Ruger is portrayed as “stupid” right from the start, which turns out at the very end to not be quite accurate but is obviously a belief he has about himself due to events from his childhood. However, the narrator who plays his part does an absolutely terrible job, of making not just Ruger but other characters he’s voicing sound like half witted meatheads. I don’t even know which narrator it is, as I’ve not listened to either of them before, but he started off ok narrating the likes of Jordan and then partway through the book, he slips into a stupid lispy voice for Jordan that makes him sound like he’s retarded or has an ABI.

The narrator who voices Thane is better, but unfortunately his performance is completely overshadowed by the monotone, unemotional voice of Ruger’s narrator who dumbs down every character he voices in a derogatory and annoying way.

The entire book is written in a very simplistic, “mansplaining” manner. There is the usual trope of terrible lack of communication causing unnecessary rifts, and the only slightly interesting part of two men exploring their sexuality and neither wanting to be the bottom in the partnership is brushed over in a way that has the issue resolved without any real story development. The entire premise of competing MC clubs is done in the most ridiculous manner with the supposed drama just glossed over and then becoming a non-issue without any actual resolution. The brotherhood of MC clue is spoken of but doesn’t exist in any apparent way through the book, and if you are hoping for a great MC storyline then don’t bother with this book. I’m unsure whether the rest of the series is the same, but the authors and narrator have done such a terrible job that I’m not bothering to listen and will be asking for a refund on the other books I had purchased.
