Enjoyable - but lacks "body"

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I kept feeling that I had missed something along the way, like there was a previous book leading up to this one. It was often referring to the feud between an old family member and one of the workers, but it never fully explained what it was all about or why etc. I felt it needed to expand more on this aspect which would have helped give the story more "body". More story and time could have been given to Ruby's mother and explanation as to why she was left at the castle and then taken away as a young child. The story just left too many questions and unanswered story lines.

Has Ruby Flynn put you off other books in this genre?

No. I have read the other three novels by Nadine Dorries and very much enjoyed those stories.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Noreen Leighton?

Yes, Noreen Leighton was a pleasure to listen too.

Was Ruby Flynn worth the listening time?

No I don't think so. 9 hours of listening to be left with too many questions and unexplained plots.

Any additional comments?

I think the characters were a let down, there really weren't any outstanding personalities that you could either love or dislike. The story just seems to only skim the surface and there were so many opportunities for explore the characters and expand on them and make it into a very enjoyable captivating read.

Movie

This story would lend itself so well to a movie. The scenery, the graphicness of life back then, romance and pain. Do it please !

brilliant book just wish it had been longer

Excellent narration. Great story reminds me of Downton Abbey. I just wish the story was longer and the author went into each of the characters lives more. Pity as there is so much scope to make the book longer.

From the convent to the castle!

Nadine Dorris paints a lovely picture of life in rural Ireland just after WW11 but takes you a while to work out quite when the story is set. Well written with a good storyline and believable characters, which are well read and easy to identify as Noreen does and excellent job with the various accents. I was just a little disappointed with the ship storyline which had a big build up up fizzled out with only a short mention of what happened and no explanation. Maybe another case of the author being told the book was too long or the deadline approaching so it had to be finished quickly. ( we readers do notice a sudden ending you know!) There was so much more I wanted to know. Some was resolved in the epilogue but it would have been lovely to have had that as another chapter.

What A Lovely Story

Nadine Dorries is very quickly becoming one of my favourite Authors. This story is beautifully written and would definitely appeal to all Downton Abbey enthusiasts. I was drawn in by this book and felt and loved each of the characters, except Rory Doyle!!
Beautifully narrated by Noreen Leighton. I would most certainly recommend this story, hence the five stars.

This book fed my heart

With its Irish setting, family relationships and, most of all, folklore and friendship. A worthwhile read
