Publisher's Summary

Winner of the Theakston's Crime Award 2014

The dead can't speak to us,” Professor Madoc had said. But that was a lie. Sometimes, only an outsider can get to the truth. Patrick had been on the outside all his life. Thoughtful, but different, infuriating even to his own mother, his life changes when he follows an obsession with death to study anatomy at university. When he uncovers a crime that everybody else was too close to see, he proves finally that he has been right all along: Nothing is exactly as it seems. And there have been many more lies closer to home....

No thanks

Overwritten, not convincing. I won’t be looking for more from this author unless there is a major change in her style.

Intriguing story and excellent narration

First Bauer book for me - the story was intriguing with different elements and angles / twists. Nothing too cerebral but fills a slot in my library for on the move listening. First class narration - well prepared around the characters with the performance bringing the characters through without over imposing the narration on the story. Definitely coming back for more.

Seeing things from a different angle

A good mystery story that has a new perspective, and a different main character that you are never too sure of his intentions.

An interesting plot, good characters, some dark humour and different settings that add to the story.

I am a little bit jaded murder mysteries, so that is the weak part for me, but if you read only a few books per year, this would be perfectly acceptable.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed this story on the whole, with its main character being an Aspergers man, I felt that most of the time his reactions were as true to life as was probable, but I was a trifle dismayed to hear him being discussed as being 'disabled'. I liked Patrick and his odd ways, the way that he coped with college life was well told.
The mother was also a bit strange, but I suppose that was relevant to the story.
All in all I enjoyed this book and finished it in one day. Will look for more by this author.

Good but -Takes a While to Get Going.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Yes but with a warning that they'll need a strong stomach to withstand the detailed postmortem passages and there's lots of them! Belinda Bauer novels are, almost by definition, very rich in detailed characterisations and background information and that's what makes them stand out from the rest. In this novel all the action really takes place in the second half but some of it is pretty unexpected and worth waiting for.

Would you be willing to try another book from Belinda Bauer? Why or why not?

I've read a couple of her novels before and yes indeed she has her place on my list.

What about Andrew Wincott’s performance did you like?

Excellent narrator. Entirely competent and very, very engaging to listen to. I'll definitely keep an eye out for more done by him.

Was Rubbernecker worth the listening time?

Yes. It was definitely worth the stomach-churning moments in the 'lab' and the wait for the plot to unwind.

Any additional comments?

A novel with the usual Belinda Bauer seal of 'different from the rest'. This is no run-of-the-mill thriller and as you'll hear.....no run-of-the mill hero either!. This guy is SO refreshingly different and his directness will give you more than a few smiles. Great stuff because he can get away it too!

Why choose an actor who cannot pronounce Welsh names and words?

This narration is really irritating as the actor can’t get his head/mouth round the most basic of Welsh words. Given that this novel is based in South Wales it would seem obvious that the actor should be Welsh - is that too much to ask?
The mispronounciation is irritating but the very poor imitation on characters’ Welsh accents is really cringeworthy. Why choose a poorly qualified performer? Makes it impossible to carry on listening.

Really enjoyed this one! Highly recommended.

This is definitely one of the books I've enjoyed most on audible. The narration was flawless and you could tell that the narrator was Welsh which fitted the narrative.

The book has a captivating story and has a very subtle underlying tone of black humour which I loved. There's a certain bit that actually made me laugh out loud (which I never do). I think you'll know which bit when you get to it.

I loved the pace of the book and couldn't stop listening to it. Definitely worth a listen!

so good!

Round about chapter 54 or 55 I thought we'd reached the end and wished it had lasted longer. To my delight there was a whole new section of crossing t's and dotting i's.
As usual from this author an excellent read with engaging characters, fascinating situations and, in this case, a chase scene that would make an exciting good film. in fact the whole story would, too.
Excellent narration, no silly voices and, thank goodness, the protagonist not over-played.

I just loved this book

What a great story. I know little about aspurgers but I think the author does. Takes a few chapters to become really involved but once in, there is no way out. Our 'hero' is a masterpiece of writing. He speaks without reserve, caution or care as a result of his illness but is constant in his desire for answers. No spoilers here - you just have to delve into those pages for yourself. I hope, like me, you will not be disappointed.

Couldn't stop listening yet uncertain about it

I adore the protagonist Patrick but the world around him is so frustrating and slow paced it was hard to relax into the story. I felt very aligned with his logic and perhaps this made other characters inability to listen simply irritating for me. There are multiple threads in what is a complex story but I rarely felt intrigued or on the edge of my seat. Some things felt obvious and I took them for granted others were good to know but not earth shattering. I think I like this book but it wasn't what I'd wanted or expected. I have a feeling I will think about this book more as time goes on, it's complex yet does not feel as complex as it is and perhaps I will like it more as I think about it. The ability to write this however is impressive the written style is wonderfully consistent and witty so it emersed me as the reader into Patrick's perceptual set, hence my rating overall being higher; the sum being greater than the parts and all that jazz.
