Critic Reviews

"A brilliant, biting critique of western beauty standards as well as a soaring, phantasmagoric, Angela Carter-esque fairy tale about trauma and the loss of self. Rouge is deeply unsettling, funny, obsessive, and unlike anything I've read. A truly mesmerizing read." (Paul Tremblay, author of The Cabin at the End of the World and A Head Full of Ghosts)
"Unsettling, whimsical, and moving, Rouge is an authentic, innovative kind of narrative magic that's both surreal and absolute. A striking novel of incandescence and heart."

(Iain Reid, author of I'm Thinking of Ending Things)

Wtf did I just read… this book was everything I wanted and more. Surrealist horror beauty fantasy… the voice performance was next level. I loved it.

The best book I’ve read in over a decade

There’s so much to explore here it’s hard to know where to start. This is Mona Awad’s magnum opus and no one can convince me otherwise. She wove threads of fairytale horror, racism, mother/daughter relationships, grief, CSA, grooming, beauty, and most of all - how trauma impacts identity and the coping mechanisms our brain uses to try to move forward, while ultimately keeping us stuck. Without spoilers I loved how a huge theme was the journey towards acceptance - acceptance of loss, trauma, and Self. And how acceptance makes room for connection and healing.
The performance was also one of the best I have ever heard. The story was so deeply enriched by the incredible narrator.
Thank you both xx

Note: please speak to your therapist before reading if you have a trauma background.

Her best yet- an exploration of the impacts of childhood sexual abuse (CSA)
