 Gottfried Keller wurde 1819 in Zürich geboren. Er starb 1890 ebenfalls in Zürich. "Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorfe" (1875) entstammt Kellers Novellenzyklus "Die Leute von Seldwyla". Der Autor verarbeitet auf bewegende Weise Shakespeares berühmtes Liebesdrama und verlegt die Handlung in eine trügerische Bergidylle. Keller unterstreicht mit der Novelle seine Meisterschaft im Erschaffen von dichter Atmosphäre und der Zeichnung greifbarer Figuren im Übergang von Romantik zu Realismus.
