About this listen

Can my straight friend help me cash in my v-card by my birthday?

In one month, I turn thirty-five with my virginity still intact. Is there anything more embarrassing than knowing most of my French students have gotten more action than me? Je suis triste.

When I accidentally reveal this secret to my close friend and co-worker Seamus, South Rock's baseball coach, he offers to help me round the bases. It has to be a joke, because Seamus is one million percent straight.

There's no way he'd want to fool around with a chubby language nerd like me, even though I've harbored a secret crush on him since the day he first walked into the teachers' lounge.

But then I realize he's not joking.

I'm either entering thirty-five with a bang . . . or a friendship going up in flames.

Contains mature themes.

This is the first time one of Truman's books annoyed me. It felt like it didn't know what it was trying to do. Love lessons, bi awakening and fake boyfriend tropes all in the same book? That felt kind of busy. Also Truman did something I really hate, which is where one MC is overweight, but the only time the word 'fat' is ever used it's exclusively negative. Positive comments are always danced around with words like curvy or fluffy (god I hate fluffy). Truman also does that sort of apologetic backstep where mention of MC's weight is immediately followed up with broad-chested or strong or something to do with muscle, as if the MC's weight is inherently negative and is somehow being redeemed by the presence of muscle as well. I would have preferred it if Truman had the courage to just have a fat character learn to like his body. My other gripe was the sexuality flip-flopping when describing the other MC - in some scenes he'll openly acknowledge he's exploring his own potential bisexuality, actually describing himself as bi-curious, and in others he's suddenly "am I gay now?" "I shouldn't enjoy this, I'm straight!". Like which is it, does bisexuality exist or is he Schrödinger's homosexual? Come onnnn can we have some consistency here!
