About this listen

When the Imagine Network commissioned a documentary on mermaids, to be filmed from the cruise ship Atargatis, they expected what they had always received before: an assortment of eyewitness reports that proved nothing, some footage that proved even less, and the kind of ratings that only came from peddling imaginary creatures to the masses.

They didn't expect actual mermaids. They certainly didn't expect those mermaids to have teeth.

This is the story of the Atargatis, lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a maritime tragedy. Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the bathypelagic zone in the Mariana Trench...and the depths are very good at keeping secrets.

Loved this - really great short horror fiction for those not looking for a mammoth undertaking. Obviously you can pick holes here and there, not every loose end is tied and it's a bit low on detail. BUT it's short, sharp and FUN! If you love a bit of horror on the ocean waves, enjoy dark underwater scares & stories of wrecked ships, it's great. Even a little bit Blair Witch with the documentary film trope. Ticked just about all my boxes, I say go for it!

If you like your mermaids SCARY!

Firstly: YMMV. There's a lot to like here, especially the notion of mermaids as cryptozoological predators. But I feel that if you're going down that path, you need to ensure the realism of what comes before the more fantastical elements. At one point an icthyologist posits a lost passenger may have been eaten by, among other things, anglerfish, and... just no, okay? Never in a million years. The inclusion of performing human mermaids is a cool wrinkle, but little is done in terms of explaining how such acts are performed (what they're described as doing is freediving, which is its own weird discipline separate from scuba).

Now, I'm a diver, so I'm coming at this with specific knowledge and explaining why it didn't work for me. Maybe that's not an issue for you, and fair enough. But ultimately, none of the characters behaved like real people to my ears, and that's not a research issue.

Lack of verisimilitude sunk this one for me.

I’ve read reviews that said it was hard to care about the characters due to the length of the novella. I cared enough to be engrossed in the book from start to finish. I’m excited to read the second book 😍

Well, that's not your usual mermaid story! Well written, great pacing and with the right amount of gruesome. Very good narration too.

Scary mermaids!
