Story
Seven years ago the Atargatis set off on a voyage to the Mariana Trench to film a mockumentary bringing to life ancient sea creatures of legend. It was lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a tragedy. Now a new crew has been assembled. But this time they're not out to entertain. Some seek to validate their life's work. Some seek the greatest hunt of all. Some seek the truth. But for the ambitious young scientist Victoria Stewart, this is a voyage to uncover the fate of the sister she lost.

Story
As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined...until now. But the journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing - and too earth-shattering in its implications - to be forgotten. Here, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it.

Story
A decade in the future, humanity thrives in the absence of sickness and disease. We owe our good health to a humble parasite - a genetically engineered tapeworm developed by the pioneering SymboGen Corporation. When implanted, the tapeworm protects us from illness, boosts our immune system - even secretes designer drugs. It's been successful beyond the scientists' wildest dreams. Now, years on, almost every human being has a SymboGen tapeworm living within them. But these parasites are getting restless. They want their own lives... and will do anything to get them.

Story
Meet Roger. Skilled with words, languages come easily to him. He instinctively understands how the world works through the power of story. Meet Dodger, his twin. Numbers are her world, her obsession, her everything. All she understands, she does so through the power of math. Roger and Dodger aren’t exactly human, though they don’t realize it. They aren’t exactly gods, either. Not entirely. Not yet. Meet Reed, skilled in the alchemical arts like his progenitor before him. Reed created Dodger and her brother. He’s not their father. Not quite. But he has a plan.

Publisher's Summary
When the Imagine Network commissioned a documentary on mermaids, to be filmed from the cruise ship Atargatis, they expected what they had always received before: an assortment of eyewitness reports that proved nothing, some footage that proved even less, and the kind of ratings that only came from peddling imaginary creatures to the masses.
They didn't expect actual mermaids. They certainly didn't expect those mermaids to have teeth.
This is the story of the Atargatis, lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a maritime tragedy. Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the bathypelagic zone in the Mariana Trench...and the depths are very good at keeping secrets.

A good companion piece
Rolling in the Deep serves as an interesting prequel to the gripping horror suspense novel Into the Drowning Deep, detailing exactly what happened to the doomed final voyage of the Atargatis seven years before the events of ItDD. If you've already read the previous book, this is a well-told backstory, but even if you haven't, it stands up on its own as a quick, brutal tale about people who go looking for mermaids and wish they'd never found them. I don't recommend reading it first, as its ending spoils one of the major reveals of ItDD. The reader did a fine job narrating the story. The only thing that bugged me was that the way she said the ship name, instead of "AA tar GAT iss" as in the previous book, kept sounding like "otter goddess," which kept making me laugh. Recommended read, especially for those who liked ItDD.

Prequel but better read as a sequel
This book reveals some plot devices that will remove some of the tension that made Into the Drowning sea so great. That's why I would advice readers to read that one before this one. This is a good book but no where near as good as it's sequel. I liked that I got to know what happened to the characters that was referred to so much in Into the Drowning Sea.

A good start to a REALLY fun series
I found Into The Drowning Deep (the second book in the series) last summer and could not stop listening. It was fun, creepy, tense, imaginative and totally addictive. I’ve been looking and hoping the first book in the series would come to audible and when I saw it finally had I bought it immediately. While I didn’t enjoy it as much as Into The Drowning Deep I think that’s because of its much shorter length. In fact, I would consider Rolling In The Deep the very extended prologue to Into The Drowning Deep. Just like it’s successor, Rolling in the Deep is tense, fun, and very creepy. I so hope we get more books in this series because for a killer mermaid story it’s incredibly compelling. If you’re looking for something entertaining or want something scary to read at the beach then you’ve hit the jackpot. Give this series a try and cross your fingers we get more.

Great story!
I loved the storyline for this book. It brought those old sailors tales of mermaids luring men to their deaths, to life, and gave a good modern spin to it. It was actually pretty creepy, and I don’t get creeped out easily. I like the narrator as well. She had a nice cool storytelling voice and a clear, calm way of speaking that made the story gel nicely. I really liked the mermaid voices. They were eerie and lilting, just the way you imagine it would be. In your nightmares!!

A Killer Story
This novella was originally a limited edition hardcover and I’m so happy to see that’s it’s on Audible now. Great characters and creepy details fuel this story to its shocking ending. Whether your a fan of Mira Grant or horror in general, you should give this a listen.

Scary as sh*t, and where's the sequel??
Amazing and scary book based on a new premise I hadn't heard before, a totally new take on sea monsters. It's begging for a sequel, and though I did read the version 1.5 of this book, which is a side story companion piece to this one, it's not a sequel. Strong characters, wild story, and loads of suspense made this one impossible to stop listening to. I was a fan of this author before I came to this book, having read a few of the Newsflesh series she's famous for, but this is totally different. The flavor of this book is entirely its own, and it's pretty frightening. If you like sea monsters, creature features, suspense, and scary stories about the ocean, you'll love this.

I enjoyed 'Into the drowning deep' but this short prequal seems largely redundant. Think of the prequal to John Carpenter's The Thing, i.e more of the same only lesser and without the suspense of not knowing the ending.
