Der berühmte niederländische Maler Rogier van der Weyden wird auf seiner Pilgerreise nach Rom in der Kutsche ganz schön durchgeschüttelt. Er braucht unbedingt eine Pause. Als die Reisegesellschaft am Kölner Dom vorbeikommt, gibt es für Rogier kein Halten mehr. In dieser Kirche liegen die Reliquien der Heiligen Drei Könige und sein neuester Auftrag lautet doch, ein Altarbild zu malen, auf dem die Heiligen Drei Könige im Mittelpunkt stehen! Das war 1450. Ungefähr sechs Jahre sind seitdem vergangen und nun ist das Altarbild endlich fertig. Doch warum spielt die Szene von Jesu Geburt bei Rogier nicht in Bethlehem sondern in den Niederlanden und wieso ist der Kaufmann, der das Bild in Auftrag gab, auch auf dem Bild, nämlich hinter Joseph, zu sehen?
