Bei der Sitzung des US-Luftschiffer-Clubs im Weldon-Institut in Philadelphia behauptet Erfinder Robur, dass die Ballone langsam und unlenkbar seien und die Zukunft allein Fluggeräten aus Metall gehöre. Wütend gehen die Ballonfahrer auf ihn los. Robur flieht, entführt den Präsidenten des Clubs samt Sekretär und Diener in seine Flugmaschine, genannt "Albatros". Eine abenteuerliche Luftreise beginnt. Sie führt über die Niagarafälle, nach China, Russland, sogar über das ewige Eis der Antarktis. Durch Sandstürme, Vulkanwolken, Mondregenbogen, einen Orkan und gefährlichen Zyklon. Schließlich gelingt es den Entführten zu fliehen, in einem Sturm stürzt die "Albatros" ab. Neun Monate später kommt es dann zum entscheidenden Duell: Die Luftschiffer haben einen Super- Ballon bauen lassen.
