Henry James (1843-1916) è stato uno scrittore americano noto per i romanzi già strutturati in modo moderno: l’uso del punto di vista soggettivo, del monologo interiore ne sono testimoni. Nato in una famiglia di intellettuali, in questo romanzo, pubblicato nel 1880, è portato a insistere più su sensazioni, pensieri, motivazioni, che non su dialoghi e azioni. La protagonista del romanzo è una donna americana dilaniata fra ruolo convenzionale e spirito moderno, e il suo spostarsi dall’America all’Europa riflette questa lacerazione. Il romanzo è ambientato per molta parte a Firenze e Roma, dove viene descritta la vita degli anglosassoni in Italia nella seconda metà dell’ottocento, vissuta come in uno scenario “bello” e come la possibilità di essere toccati dall’arte. Possibilità che però, evidentemente, non fa realizzare ai protagonisti quella felicità di cui sono in cerca, poiché l’arte diviene collezionismo e denaro, e il “bello” viene contenuto in giardini ben regolati, così come le convenzioni delle tradizioni regolano e limitano la sensibilità della protagonista.Cornice musicale: Loch Lomond, arrangiata da Kevin Mac Leod.
