Story
To a jockey, losing his license is the equivalent of being struck off, or disbarred, or cashiered. When steeplechase rider Kelly Hughes lost his license his first feelings were of bewilderment and disbelief, for he was not guilty of the charges. Nor, to the best of his knowledge, was the trainer he had ridden for, who lost his livelihood as well. When his first stunned state of shock subsided, Kelly began to wonder why he had been framed, who had done it, and how it had been achieved.

Issues with Audiobook Audio
Tony Britton is a great narrator. Sadly, the audio quality and volume on this title is very variable, and at times, almost incomprehensible. Also, there is a large chunk of the end of Chapter 1 which is missing ....

Dick Francis at his best
This is one of Dick Francis' better books and he delivers a good tale every time he gives us a new book. I found the action and story to be fast paced and well narrated. The plot revolves around an accountant in the racing world trying to determine why he was kidnapped. This not one of those tales that you can work out who the villain is until almost the end. It also has a suprising conclusion which does not detract from the tale. The reader does well to pass along the suspense and emotion without being over the top. I have listened to this a few times already and enjoyed it every time. I have also read and loved the book. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a light, but satisfying, whodunnit.

Fast - kept interest, Slow - time to imagine
As usual in the 44 mysteries by Dick Francis, my favorite author, the main character is an honest, hard working man who is respectful of women and unexplained things keep happening to him, as happened in RISK.
The hero may get shot, stabbed or beaten up but he doesn't go looking to shoot, stab or beat anyone up, just to solve the problem and make it go away. This describes WILD HORSES about a movie director, 10 LB PENALTY about a young man helping sis father run for Parliament, TO THE HILT about an artist, STRAIGHT about a jockey whose brother is a gem wholesaler, LONGSHOT about an author, PROOF about a wine merchant, REFLEX about a jockey becoming a photographer, HIGH STAKES about a toy designer, All but 6 books are stand alone. Some were made into TV movies and series.
It is very nice that the author refrains from graphic sex and violence. Of course, these are mysteries so some violence is expected as well some romance as the characters are well rounded.
Dick Francis was the Queen Mother's steeplechase jockey and champion before retiring in the 1950's. He went on to write a horse race column and then all these mysteries. Very few of the mysteries are duds but all mention horse racing in the background if not in the main story. A dependable mystery nearly every time and I always learn something I didn't know before.

Disappointed with quality
What disappointed you about Risk?
I downloaded this twice as I thought the missing chunk was down to a glitch in my download rather than the actual audio book. Having read other reviews I realized that other people had the same problem. This ruined the book for me as it occurred very early on at an important part of the story.
What does Tony Britton bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
I've always enjoyed Tony Britton's readings of the Dick Francis novels, He doesn't impose his own personality on the characters unlike some other actors I've listened to.
You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I liked the story but was so unhappy with the production.
Any additional comments?
Somebody ought to listen to the books before they are uploaded to ensure that they are complete!

Problems with audio seem to be fixed
To start I should say that I was nervous about downloading this one due to many reviews saying parts of the audio were missing, but I was downloading in Jan 2021 and audible must have fixed the download because there was nothing missing here. The track is a little grainy but fine to listen to.
The plot is standard Francis - accountant and part time jockey gets mixed up with some wrong-uns without realising why and then had to fathom out who is behind it all from a cast of half a dozen possibles.
For me, neither his best (I like some of the early ones better like Nerve and For Kicks) or worst (Flying Finish and Rat Race), but somewhere in the middle. Worth a credit and will listen to it again in a few months.
Recording quality ok, narration good, plot decent.

Audiobook file is faulty - missing a big chunk
What did you like most about Risk?
It's a great book but the audio book has dreadful sound quality and there is a big chunk of the story missing, avoid this version until audible fix it.
Any additional comments?
Too many old recordings like this are being resold as downloadables without any checks on sound quality or continuity. I've had a few faulty files and the quality needs to be improved (sound remastering / qc) before audible sells them. Shame as its a cracking story.

What did you like best about this story?
Enjoyed the scenarios and the "hero's" relationships with the 2 women were interesting and not entirely predictable.
What about Tony Britton’s performance did you like?
Good at differentiating between the characters

No Problem With Sound Quality
Audiobook purchased early 2022. To my ears there was no problems with the sound quality. I think Audible must have fixed the issues that have been reported earlier.
Excellent reading by Tony Britton. I’ve always found Tony Britton to be the perfect narrator of Dick Francis’s books.
