Publisher's Summary

For years, Hurnungaz and the Hooded have defied the Sheriff of Nottingham, the Black Bishop, Paol, Archbishop Simon D’Rainault and others who have tried to govern and rule Sherewode and the towns and cities that reside within its borders. The sheriff, in particular, has become a laughing stock to other Norman lords. The Black Bishop’s plan, to build a cathedral to the Christ of the East in the heart of Sherewode, to tear out the infection of Paganism, old Gods, and old beliefs, has almost come to nothing. The sheriff is given an ultimatum by the king....

A host, almost beyond count, assembles in the dead heart of Sherewode. The forest has been chopped and burned and blessed, but still the ancient forest and its guardians resist. Hurnungaz, whom some called Robin, and his Hooded - the Norse King’s Man, Wulfrun of Scarsdale, the Welsh Druid, Brother Bwyd, the assassin Mar, the stone smith Hereseige John, Muna, the lady in white, the Ænglishman Wenlock, and others - assemble to face the sheriff’s host. But even with assistance from the mysterious Caerne, will it be enough, or will the sheriff and the Black Bishop triumph?
