GM probably wouldn't have survived the # me too movement. he was conflicted in so many ways...a naturalist who decimated basking shark numbers in the Hebrides for decades yet "loved"nature.. he surrounded himself with vulnerable young men (really boys) yet pretended a glamorous marriage, he hated the public and scorned their attention yet needed them, he loved killing, the royals, prestige & status...and yet and yet....his writing is beautiful. He destroyed Sandaig as he destroyed himself with this kind of maverick self destruction. And yet and yet...he was deeply flawed and probably not someone you'd be bothered to meet (unless you were wealthy and connected, he'd not want to meet you anyway)..his writing about Sandaig, the islands, the Mackinnon's, Jonny and yes, okay, Mij and Edal (it is Sandaig this book is about, not the otters, not really) is just so perfect.

Conflicted yet so elegant...brilliant.
